About this listen
In The Battle for Your Computer: Israel and the Growth of the Global Cyber-Security Industry, Israeli Defense Force (IDF) cyberwarfare veteran and tech product leader Alon Arvatz examines the "why" and the "how" of the extraordinarily strong connection between Israel's elite cyber military unit and that country's booming offensive and defensive cybersecurity industry. In the book, you'll explore the central role played by Israel in the global fight for cybersecurity supremacy.
Featuring interviews with some of the world's leading cybersecurity professionals and leaders, The Battle for Your Computer explains how the IDF's "Unit 8200" became the globe's most fruitful incubator of cyber technologies. You'll also find: explanations of how the technologies that protect your own computers at home and at work probably began their lives in IDF personnel or equipment; the stories of the men and women working to protect Israel and how they pivoted to protecting her technology against attack; and answers to fascinating questions like: How does an offensive cyber company decide to whom to sell its tech?
An endlessly engrossing take on an equally engrossing subject, The Battle for Your Computer is a must-listen for laypeople and cyber experts alike.

You can’t get there from here…
Firstly a really interesting listen
Secondly Alon really *so* focussed on what Israel has brought to the industry that I think he missed a trick in better comparing approaches in different countries more - he seriously has the kudos to write the book and, er, brag about such amazing achievements - as I’m paying I’d have liked a bit more how to than how we.
I titled the review “You can’t get there from here…” because Alon does cover that there are unique circumstances which have resulted in Israel having such a disproportionate share of the cybersecurity software (and service) marketplace - but you can’t build that anywhere else which does bring into question some of the value of the book.
Almost all of the name checked companies have been or are in use in my organisation and this is testament to the hard work that he and his countrymen (almost entirely men, a challenge which is lightly touched on) put in as well as an unmatched work ethic.
My biggest take away from the book is that I think I might have been supposed to be one of Alon’s colleagues - whilst I was looking for a college to study computing in my part of the UK, Tel Aviv was already skilling up todays tech leaders.
