Summary

The Beach Hut follows the stories of the families who come to Everdene each year, people who fall in – or out – of love, remembering their pasts, or trying to forget them…There’s Jane Milton, left only debts by her husband, and forced to sell the beloved beach hut that holds so many happy memories; Sarah; for whom fidelity has lost its appeal; and Harry, suffering from the anguish of first love when he falls for Florence – who has grown up to be far more alluring than she ever used to be.

Beautifully read

This audiobook is beautifully read by Julia Franklin - she voices all the characters perfectly and really brings this story alive. Unfortunately, I did not particularly like any of the characters and lost interest in their lives. I do feel that a perfect 'chick lit' novel should completely engross you in the story and lives of the characters so that you feel a real sense of loss when you have finished listening or reading (listen to Erica James 'the Hidden Cottage' for a perfect example!). This was not the case with this book, the characters lacked depth and I also felt that Veronica Henry failed to portray a convincing picture of the coastal setting. I never really felt like I was there by the sea, or in the characters lives.

A surfeit of characters who never cohere

Any additional comments?

This held promise for a while - well-narrated, sympathetic and engaging characters each with their own private travails one hopes they will overcome as the audio and their story unfolds. But no such luck.

No sooner has one become locked in and interested in the story of one character, than we leave them for a new character. This happened so many times that it eventually became evident that there would be no time left to return to them in any way that would allow us to get to know them more deeply, or explore their lives in any meaningful way. In fact I'm sure there were several characters we barely saw again - others we don't meet again till the last half hour of the book by which time, having met such a surfeit of disparate, unconnected people I'd totally forgotten their names and backstories. A real shame as Veronica Henry can really make her audience care but what's the point if we never get to know them once we've been teased into connecting with them?

Imagine queuing up for an enticing buffet featuring a heady number of varying world cuisines. There are too many different countries represented but nonetheless you enjoy catching different enticing aromas and are even allowed a tasting spoon of certain dishes but you never get to sit down and enjoy even one plateful. This book is even more exasperating - you are drawn in and are rewarded with precisely nothing.

Perhaps I didn't listen attentively enough though I've been enjoying audiobooks since the age of four. I'm fairly certain that the only thing connecting many characters was the fact that their feet, at one time or another, walk along the same beach. The interaction between the whole cast spans from minimal to non-existent which is also a fair summation for my enjoyment of the whole book.

Another good story from Veronica Henry

If you could sum up The Beach Hut in three words, what would they be?

Funny, light hearted, compelling

Who was your favorite character and why?

I couldn't name just one, as there are multiple characters all interlinked. I really liked hearing about all the different characters and their points of view on life, family and experiences. I thought it was clever how she put everything together.

Have you listened to any of Julia Franklin’s other performances? How does this one compare?

No I havn't, but I enjoyed this performance.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Overall I enjoyed the book, it was compelling, I couldn't stop listening.

A romantic story with some unexpected twists

Where does The Beach Hut rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Some breathtaking descriptions of the coastline, beautiful images are conjured by the narrative and a story that has many twists and turns along the way.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Beach Hut?

The discovery of why the house was of such importance to the new owner and what it had signified.

Have you listened to any of Julia Franklin’s other performances? How does this one compare?

Excellent narration as ever, with very distinct characterisations

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Some very sad moments in the book, but others that made you truly smile with pleasure.

Any additional comments?

A great holiday read.

Good easy listening

Good book to listen to.
The narrator doesn't have a wide range of voices but is still easy to listen to.

Would recommend a listen.

Wonderful story.

This is a clever story telling of many different families and their life in their beach hut. As usual Julia Franklin does a lovely job of reading. A lovely introduction lead in and you are captured into wanting to listen to what will happen next. A very happy and cheerful story, no fighting!! I recommend this book with no reservations.

The best

I absolutely loved this book, different stories, all complete, all completely different yet coming together as an overall story. Roll on the next Veronica Henry.

Terrible Narration

Had been looking forward to listening to this book, but had to return it a few chapters in, as the narrator has an irritatingly terse, rushed and snobby voice, with frequent, annoying sharp intakes of breath. Very disappointing.
