About this listen

'It looks like he died from injuries sustained during a fall....' Best-selling author Jasper Fforde begins an effervescent new series.

It's Easter in Reading - a bad time for eggs - and no one can remember the last sunny day. Humpty Dumpty, well-known nursery favourite, large egg, ex-convict and former millionaire philanthropist, is found shattered beneath a wall in a shabby area of town.

Following the pathologist's careful reconstruction of Humpty's shell, Detective Inspector Jack Spratt and his Sergeant, Mary Mary, are soon grappling with a sinister plot involving cross-border money laundering, the illegal Bearnaise sauce market, corporate politics and the cut and thrust world of international chiropody.

As Jack and Mary stumble around the streets of Reading in Jack's lime green Austin Allegro, the clues pile up, but Jack has his own problems to deal with. And on top of everything else, the JellyMan is coming to town....

Great fun!

Clever, funny...Good entertainment and very well read. Enjoyably zany plot with surprisingly believable characters, despite all the Nursery Rhyme mayhem.

Witty and clever take on familiar fairy tales

The story contained lots of twists and turns. Very funny story with great characters. Lots of subtle humour and unexpected one liners, delivered brilliantly by the narrator. I loved every minute of it.

Clever, witty and very entertaining

As all Jasper Ffords stories, this is entirely entertaining, moves at a great pace and in places laugh out loud- but generally very amusing. I found the narrator easy to listen to and their selection of character voices fitting in really nicely. Happy to recommend

Impressive

Still has annoying music but as always brilliantly written. The world is so close to our own you feel you can visit it and you know the characters already.
The narration was full of characters but the female characters sounded a weird.
All in all I really enjoyed this first in series book and will be starting the next immediately.

A fun read

The Big Over Easy was a fun book with some clever twists and turns. Luke Thompson did a good job of reading and had some great voices for the different characters.

Absolutely fantastic

I loved this so much I'm immediately following it with the second one in the series.
The narration was one of the best I've heard.
I didn't like his Thursday books but thoroughly enjoyed his ' The Constant Rabbit' and after I'd finished that I listened to this one.
I can't recommend highly enough, they're the perfect antidote for all the lock down lunacy.
