Summary

May 1992, and after four LAPD officers were acquitted after the savage beating of Rodney King, Los Angeles is ablaze. As looting and burning take over the city, law and order are swept away in a tidal wave of violence. But under threat of their lives, homicide detectives like Harry Bosch are still stubbornly trying to do their job. With no effective police presence on the streets, murder just got a whole lot easier - and investigating them got a whole lot harder.

Escorted by National Guard soldiers from murder scene to murder scene, Harry and his colleagues are only able to do the bare minimum in terms of collecting evidence. And for Harry that's not enough. When he finds the body of a female journalist executed in an alley, he cannot accept that he will never be able to bring her killer to justice, and her tragedy starts to eat into his soul. But then, 20 years later, Harry finds himself working in the Open Unsolved Unit, and suddenly the past comes back to haunt him once again, in a way he could never have imagined.

Read by Michael McConnohie. Michael McConnohie has had a long career as both an on-camera and voiceover actor. He was two of the original Transformers as well as a GI Joe in the cartoon series which is still airing today, and has lent his voice to countless TV shows and motion pictures. He has been an audiobook presence for decades. From true crime to fiction to self-help, he's read just about every kind of audiobook there is. He's an AudioFile Earphones award winner for Stuart M. Kaminsky's Always Say Goodbye, and was part of the Grammy-nominated Lincoln-Douglas Debates with David Straithairn and Richard Dreyfuss. Michael makes his home in Southern California.

Not bad, but...

I have always enjoyed Michael Connelly's books, and the story of this book isn't bad, but not the best. The narrator however I found extremely irritating. The way he read the book was like a sixties american newsreader at times - especially early on n the book. So either he gets better or I got used to it!

Shame about the narrator

Another great Bosch book from Michael Connelly but spoiled for me by the narration. Picked up at times but in general could have been a newsreader. He read at times as if he had lost interest and was just plodding on. Much better with Len Cariou who genuinely brought the book to life. I had to persevere at times but didn't want to miss out on a book in the series. Hoping the next one will be better with Titus Welliver.

Disappointed

I was disappointed in this Harry B book. The pace was very slow and over a 10 hour read it wasn't until the last hour and a half that it picked up and caught my attention. Up untiI then I never had difficulty in putting it down. Generally I like Micheal Connolly and the Harry B books but this wasn't one of his better ones.

Not classic Bosch but still very good

This isnt an absolutely class Harry Bosch tale but it is still very well written, plotted and read. The plot has a gratifying number of red herrings leading you off in one direction before doubling back. I cant say more for fear of spoilers! So recommended but not the right story to start with if youre a Bosch newcomer.

As fresh as ever!

Another Harry Bosch, as he nears retirement. The story was gripping and the narration added to the experience, which is not always the case.

Bosch is at it again

Harry Bosch continues to do what he does best. Relentlessly pursuing justice whilst rebelling against conformity. Once again the powers that be are against him. Connelly again keeps the story flowing whilst being extremely insightful , it's difficult to stop listening. If you like Bosch you won't be disappointed.

Great book, poor narrator

Great book, poor choice of narrator, wish dick Hill was still doing them as he got into character.

Another riveting Bosch book. Couldn't put down, read it along with the narration. Can't wait for the next one. yelseeb
