Summary

Paige, Richard and me. We thought we’d be friends forever. But everything changed the day we took the shortcut home from school along the old railway line. I wish we’d gone the long way. I wish we hadn’t seen our classmate, pale and still in the undergrowth. And I wish we hadn’t promised to keep one, awful detail a secret just between us....

Twenty years later, I have a brand-new life and try never to think about my old one. But I’m dragged back when Paige calls out of the blue. Richard has been accused of something terrible. Everyone back home is whispering about the body we found years ago and saying Richard deserves to be locked up....

Before I know it, I’ve returned to the small town I thought I’d never see again. Paige is almost the same as I remember - jet-black hair, slender frame - but why does she seem so nervous?

Revealing the truth about what we saw that day 20 years ago could clear Richard’s name...but will the blame fall on me? And can I really trust that Paige is on my side - or is she hiding her own dark secret?

When we find a strange note in Richard’s flat, only one thing is for certain: Someone else knows the truth too. All three of us are in danger....

Perfect for fans of Lisa Jewell, I Am Watching You, and The Girl on the Train.

Like watching paint dry

I tried. I really tried but it was so boring, and repetitive, I gave up.
Sad I can’t return

Such a disappointment

I really did try to keep listening but in all honesty, this is a pathetic novel. Narration is boring but I guess the reader had so little to work with that it should not have surprised me. I think I could have written a better novel! I struggled for the first hour but gave up the will to continue and will return unfinished and unloved.

Boring story, or is it just that the narrator sounds like he’d rather be anywhere else?

If it wasn’t for my strange OCD with completion, I’d never have got to the end of this. Aside from the fact I can’t tell if it was just an uninteresting read or wether it was the apathetic tone of the narrator, I don’t think I’ve ever come across a more passive protagonist. A main character who could have halved the written pages by simply asking questions of the people he’s with, like his two best friends perhaps? Instead, we are treated to his inner narrative about how he doesn’t want to upset them by asking pertinent questions of them during a double murder investigation. Really daft. Characters are set up and given backstory who either have no payoff later, or serve only as a device for a random scene later. Everything feels so contrived. Oh, and strap yourself in for the crazy excitement as our hero visits the Co-op, the Pub, the off-licence, the chippy, the vape shop, the antiques shop, his sisters house and the flats of his two mates, either continuously or when he needs to ‘accidentally’ overhear or bump into someone. Narrator doesn’t help and sounds like a tired Dad at the end of a long working day trying to get the kids to bed by reading a story he’s read a hundred times before. Awful.
