Summary

When amateur sleuth Augusta Peel receives a mysterious letter about a missing young woman, she can’t resist helping with the search. But the case takes a turn when an art student is found dead in a Bloomsbury square.

Could the murder have something to do with Augusta’s investigation? The more questions she asks, the fewer answers she receives.

Someone’s hiding something. Has Augusta really got the time to discover what it is? She’s supposed to be running her new venture—a second-hand bookshop in Bloomsbury. Fortunately her wartime spy colleague, Detective Inspector Philip Fisher of Scotland Yard, is on hand to help.

A second murder piles on the pressure. For as long as secrets remain buried, young women are in danger …

Beautifully read

A relaxing whodunnit that kept the listener’s attention though the story was very conventional with a limited number of potential suspects.Such a novel had to be read by an older female English reader as the main character was getting on in years and happily it was not someone with a North American accent which would have prevented me listening at all.It is important that the person chosen to read any book is suitable as a good story can be avoided just by listening to a sample.
I shall certainly look out for more of the same on Audible whether from this author or others who can provide a convincing tale read by someone who understands the need for clear diction

Most enjoyable

Entertaining and light, recommended for a few hours of solace. The historical note at the end is a nice touch.

Where’s the characterisation? Dull, flat narration.

I tried to like this story but the reading was so flat, uninteresting and dull that I failed to find a anchor to enjoy and pull me in. I have thousands of audiobooks now so I know when I am going to click with a narrator or not and I don’t with this one. I have listened to the book twice and I can’t tell you what the story was about, I was just switched off by the story telling. This is go on the bookshelf’ and will stay there as there are so many other, more engaging books to listen to.

Am ok story, unfortunately the villain was obvious from the start but was a pleasant listen while doing craft work.

The narrator is very poor

I like the story but the narrator cannot pronounce English words correctly, for example Holburn, status (americanised), and many more words mispronounced with a generally americanised pronunciation. in previous recordings, for example, she fails to pronounce the surname Lennox correctly. it totally detracts from the enjoyment of listening and has moved me to write a review!
