Summary

Los Angeles, 1908.

Ex-heiress Anna Blanc is precariously employed by the Los Angeles Police Department, reforming delinquent children and minding lady jailbirds. Badly. What she really wants is to trap criminals and be alone with the delicious Detective Joe Singer—both pursuits that could get her fired. If she loses her income, she’ll be on the street.

While hunting truants in Griffith Park, Anna and Joe discover the body of a young John Doe. With Anna’s job on the line, Joe warns her away, but Anna can't resist. She's on the case.

Another treat

These Anna Blanc mysteries are a pleasure to listen to. They are always carefully plotted, but the attention to historical details, the “laugh out loud” humour and the on/off romance between Anna and Joe Singer always manage to distract me from trying to guess the perpetrator, and the twists usually leave me surprised. The clues are always there, though, so there is never a sense of frustration at having been misled. The narration is very good as well. I read the first two books but will be treating myself to the audiobook versions of future books in the series. It still amazes me that these books are not on tv yet - hopefully amazon or Netflix will put that right soon.
