Summary

The dazzling new novel from the best-selling author of Cloud Atlas.

Longlisted for the Man Booker Prize 2014

Run away, one drowsy summer's afternoon, with Holly Sykes: wayward teenager, broken-hearted rebel and unwitting pawn in a titanic, hidden conflict.

Over six decades, the consequences of a moment's impulse unfold, drawing an ordinary woman into a world far beyond her imagining. And as life in the near future turns perilous, the pledge she made to a stranger may become the key to her family's survival....

What a journey!

I have read this book a few years ago but I could listen to it again and again. What a story: each section has you enthralled. The only downside was the narrator of Marius for me. Everyone else was brilliant.

Ruined by a load of envrio-twaddle at the end

Story: Great premise
End: Ruined by enviro-apocalyptico-hysteria
Performance: Some readers better than others. Should have had the same actors narrate the speech of the same characters throughout.

Brilliant

Great narration, a long convoluted story which kept me rivetted throughout. But more than just a story, also an eye opener about a potential future life for Western Europe and perhaps reflecting current life in Syria and many other places.

I love this author!

Well worth seeking out the unabridged versions of Mitchell’s stories, I’m not sure how on earth he manages to edit out 15 hours of text for his abridged versions! Don’t get me wrong, they still read well, however the depth and breath, the ability to wallow in the worlds created are just so much richer…
This story is beautiful! The different worlds and viewpoints are so well constructed. The way Mitchell rounds his characters is extraordinary and he even manages to write his baddies in a way that you fall in love with them.
I must have listed s to this story in excess of 30 times. I pick a part and it’s like taking a vacation, I bask in that part of the story, languish amongst the words and worlds he creates.
I love Ed’s tale, so realistically told. Crispin is a character whom is utterly flawed and so far from my own experience, yet one I quickly warmed to and love to revisit. It’s probably Hugo’s story I enjoy the most, particularly the events around New Year and his venerability as he falls head of heels in love for the first (and last) time.
The final instalment is set in a dystopian, near future. The realism of this part of the story is so frightening as it’s just too easy to see happening. This section could easily be fleshed out into a standalone book and one I’d be very keen to buy and further explore the world foreseen.
David, thank you. I gain so much from your writing and my little life would be ever so slightly duller if it wasn’t for the enormous effort you must put into your writing.

Good but have a paper copy to hand.

Overall I thought this book was really good. unfortunately the last but one actor was in my view awful. I found the different characters voices samey and the ones which did sound different were embarrassing. Which made it at times hard to follow. I actually brought the book and read her part myself as I couldn't listen to her. That said the actor who reads part two was brilliant and would of loved him to have read the whole book. The story was interesting, funny, sad and unput down able.

In another dimension.

Started out well, drawn into the plot and various characters, had me wondering how it was going to turn out but half way through it became so unbelievable I nearly gave up but persevered to a more believable ending. The book started out as 5 stars the middle 2 stars and ending 3.

Great story but…..

…. The 4th narrator is truly terrible. Thankfully the quality of the writing and the story being told make up for it

A fantastic tale

I absolutely love this book including its self-referencing and Crispin's breeches of the 4th wall. There is humour to help you through the dark bits and real, flawed characters without compromising on the concepts of good and evil. On the whole, the narration was excellent but I when it came to the part of the story where Mitchell was asking for the greatest degree of suspension of our disbelief, we encountered an unconvincing narrator who could not render the wide range of accents required well enough not to distract. All I can say is hang in there and focus on the tale. You will not regret it.
