About this listen

If a man beats you, you never let your anger show, never at the time. You wait until he least expects it, until nobody remembers that you were angry at all....

In 1860s Southern California, life on the Burn ranch has been peaceful for 15-year-old John Evert since the death of his father. But recently there have been violent raids on nearby properties, where it's not just cattle and horses that are taken but women, too. And when the white-painted men arrive at the Burn ranch on horses in the dead of night, John Evert is near-fatally injured, his beloved mother spirited away, and their house torched to the ground.

Setting out on a journey to find his mother and reclaim his land, John Evert will fight in the Civil War and befriend an outlaw, challenge his assumptions and fall in love, before returning to fledgling Los Angeles older, sager and set on revenge....

A Solid Western

I did enjoy this book a great deal. It is very refreshing to find a good contemporary western and I would recommend it to any fan of the genre. Langdale does an excellent job of recreating and transporting you to 1860s Los Angeles and the battlefields of the Civil War. The story is also filled with some memorable characters. That said, John Everett, the hero, can be a frustrating character given his apparently boundless naivete. I also felt if you have seen many westerns you will very quickly figure out of the story's pivotal mysteries. However I am a firm believer that sometimes it is great to see the fundamentals done very well, and Landale certainly achieves that making for a fine story overall.

Todd Boyce also does a good job narrating. Given his status as an American working in the UK he nails both the American and English characters (of whom there are two). There were a couple of occasions where the voice of one character carried over into lines spoken by another, which broke the immersion somewhat. Also at several points he paused midway in conversation which again was jarring. However despite these minor issues he overall delivers a good performance.

Great yarn, well told.

A long tale, ultimately satisfying and engaging. Well worth a listen, I'm expecting a second rate film of this good old story. Cold Mountain anyone?
