About this listen
After a century of war, revolutions, and imperial conquests, 1790s Europe is still embroiled in a battle for control of the sea and colonies. Tall ships navigate familiar and foreign waters, and ambitious young men without rank or status seek their futures in naval commands.
First Lieutenant Alexander Clay of the frigate Agrius is self-made, clever, and ready for the new age. But the old world, dominated by patronage, retains a tight hold on advancement. Though Clay has proven himself many times over, Captain Percy Follett is determined to promote his own nephew.
Before Clay finds a way to receive due credit for his exploits, he'll first need to survive them. Ill-conceived expeditions ashore, hunts for privateers in treacherous fog, and a desperate chase across the Atlantic are only some of the challenges he faces. He must endeavor to bring his ship and crew through a series of adventures stretching from the bleak coast of Flanders to the warm waters of the Caribbean. Only then might high society recognize his achievements - and allow him to ask for the hand of Lydia Browning, the woman who loves him regardless of his station.

Can hardly wait to start book 2 - Good Story
Good Story. Individual characters seemed to genuinely reflect the times (Late 18th Century). Book 1 made me hungry to start Book 2. For those that love the historical seafaring novel, this is a refreshingly new author.

good book ruined?
I don't like to be critical, and listen to almost everything in this genre and I am appreciative of different styles..but the narrator was a very bad choice. To say but a few things:
His diction is not clear.
His pronunciation is poor.
His character accents are woeful.
His knowledge of terms is weak, so they are said phonetically regardless.
Above all sentence are struggled over, maybe the text is poorly punctuated, but it is probably not.
Altogether it sounds a bit like a middle school reading class going wrong.
I don't mean to be harsh, but I'm sorry I couldn't get past half an hour...and this isn't a free book!
Please get somebody to narrate this series Audible and republish.

Good Story, delivery could be better
An enjoyable story in the mould of Hornblower and Aubrey-Maturin, good mix of action and plot. Narrator was not the right choice, dialogue was well delivered but accents were all over the place, would have been better not to attempt them at all and words like ‘Robespierre’ and ‘Lieutenant’ (should always be Lef-tenant) mispronounced throughout.

Frustrated because the Narrator can’t pronounce words correctly
An enjoyable tale blunted by constant mispronunciation of “lieutenant “ the American way ( loot rather than left) and simple nautical terms like forecastle. Continues in the second book too but hopefully the new narrator in books 3&4 will have a better grasp!
