In The Case Against Socialism, Rand Paul outlines the history of socialism, from Stalin’s gulags to the current famine in Venezuela. He tackles common misconceptions about the “utopia” of socialist Europe. As it turns out, Scandinavian countries love capitalism as much as Americans, and have, for decades, been cutting back on the things Bernie loves the most.
Socialism’s return is only possible because many Americans have forgotten the true dangers of the 20th-century’s deadliest ideology. Paul reveals the devastating truth: For every college student sporting a Che Guevara T-shirt, there’s a Venezuelan child dying of starvation. Desperate refugees flee communist Cuba to escape oppressive censorship, rationed food and squalid hospitals, not "free" healthcare. Socialist dictatorships like the People’s Republic of China crush freedom of speech and run massive surveillance states while masquerading as enlightened modern nations. Far from providing economic freedom, socialist governments enslave their citizens. They offer illusory promises of safety and equality while restricting personal liberty, tightening state power, sapping human enterprise and making citizens dependent on the dole.

Like father like son!
Like father like son!
Rand Paul gives many compelling arguements against Socialism, including a strong focus on the kind of Socialist ideas being put forward now by the left.
I bought the audio version of this book; his wife Kelley narrates it particularly well.
Lastly, don't be deterred by the one stars, they've almost certainly been given by lifelong Bernie supporters.

Uncomfortable read
As a lifelong UK Labour Party supporter, I do not usually expose myself to a sustained exposition of the opposing view.
However I share Rand Paul's view that it is not healthy to become too tribal or to prefer the echo chamber to the Forum.
The strength of the book is the coherence and consistency of its libertarian thesis that we should beware of acquiescing or supporting the increased role of the state.
The weakness of the book (for a UK reader at least) is that it seeks to bolster it's arguments by scoring 'points' against US politicians with opposing views. This seems to lead to unnecessary personalisation of the issues.
Similarly the analysis of 20th century regimes in other countries is not even-handed or balanced.
The most uncomfortable part of the book for me was the analysis of the modern philosophical basis of the views of Rand Paul. I have to admit to being a fan of Karl Popper's ideas without realising (as I probably should) that his views would be espoused by those I have always perceived to be in the other camp.
The book has therefore served a good purpose for me. it has made me less sure regarding my political allegiance. This is as it should be as no group has a monopoly on wisdom

Important book relating to contemporary tensions
Hopefully this book will inform as many people as possible. Great narration and excellent dialog

Moronic arguments.
The author straw mans the idea that contemporary political figures such as Bernie Sanders advocate for Venezuelan/Marxist planned economies. If you actually read their policies they are proposing Nordic style democratic socialism which has resulted incredible gains in quality of life in those European countries. This awful book is full of lies and misinterpretations designed to pander to the typical right wing ideologue.

Disappointing
I was looking forward to some genuine food for thought, stepping out of my comfort zone to hear the other side. From very early on when the very first definition of socialism was wrong this became a manual for many logical fallacies. Strawman after strawman, cherry picking, guilt by association etc. There are some good points he brings up but since the rest of the book consists of bad faith arguments designed to stir people up it's hard to not think the nicer comments towards the end of the book is just hypocrisy. Glad I bought it at a discount though I should ask for my money back.
