Summary

In The Case for Grace, best-selling author Lee Strobel offers an accessible explanation of the theology of God's grace - shown through incredible, dramatic, can't-put-it-down stories of people whose lives were changed.

In this audiobook, you'll encounter racists, addicts, and even murderers who have found new hope and purpose. You'll meet once-bitter people who have received God's power to forgive those who have harmed them - and, equally amazing, people mired in guilt who have discovered that they can even forgive themselves.

Writing with unusual candor, Lee draws upon his own journey from atheism to Christianity to explore the depth and breadth of God's redeeming love for spiritually wayward people. He travels thousands of miles to capture the inspiring stories of everyday people whose values have been radically changed and who have discovered the "how" and "why" behind God's amazing grace.

Through it all, you will be encouraged as you see how God's grace can revolutionize your eternity and relationships...starting today.

Personal stories

This isn't Strobel with his apologist's hat on. This work contains personal stories of people who came to Christ. Each chapter has the person tell their story - where they started, their lowest points, how they were introduced to the gospel or re-introduced to grace - and moves into reflective dialogue, interspersed with Strobel's own thoughts on the matter. They are a series of roughly 8 interviews written by a seasoned journalist. We have some dark stories here, so consider yourself cautioned.

SPOILER ALERT: I discuss 3 of the personal stories below.

One story is about a woman who was roaming the streets from the age of 3, enduring horrific types of abuse. We trace her life up until the time she was taken in by a family, when the woman was shocked to find that they didn't expect her to do housework, that indeed their love was freely given. Another story sees a man as an addict in the midst of homelessness. We hear his story of coming to Christ and the profound things he did as a direct result. There is an assortment of other stories too. The main idea that Strobel drives with, is the idea that God's love is freely given. It's grace. Once we accept this gift, amazing things can happen.

As mentioned, this isn't Strobel doing apologetics, that thing he is widely known for. And that's fine, I was aware of that going in. I was on the lookout for personal testimonies (occasionally I listen to them, perhaps on YouTube) and this book is just that. It is a series of personal stories by individuals who found Christ. There are also stories of people who were already Christian but committed some error, eventually re-discovering the power of forgiveness, including forgiveness from the person they wronged. We also have Strobel movingly recount issues with his own father.

It's narrated very well by the author. A minor criticism is that occasionally it's not entirely clear who is doing the talking. This is unproblematic in the text version, of course, where inverted commas clarify such things. But that's only a minor issue and did not ruin the experience.

All in all, a healthy 4 out of 5. I'm glad to have listened to these amazing personal stories. God is good.

Enjoyed this book

I enjoyed this book … a series of stories that are relatable and help to consider grace in new ways. I think it helped me in that sense but I also feel like I will use these stories to help me explain concepts to others. There is something very evoking about the stories.

Absolutely brilliant. Read it!

One of the best Christian books I have ever read. The most incredible stories of God's grace ranging from mass murder in Cambodia, marriages torn apart and so much more. No holes barred. Lee has been given a God given gift as a master story teller. Listened to it in one sitting. Anyone who does not read this is missing out. Trust me.
