About this listen

Clan of the Cave Bear is the first novel in Jean M. Auel's magnificent best-selling epic of life 35,000 years ago. Leave the 21st century and go back to Ice Age Europe. Follow Ayla, a Cro-Magnon child who loses her parents in an earthquake and is adopted by a tribe of Neanderthal, the Clan. See how the Clan's wary suspicion is gradually transformed into acceptance of this girl, so different from them, under the guidance of its medicine woman, Iza, and its wise holy man, Creb. Immerse yourself in a world dictated by the demands of survival in a hostile environment, and be swept away in an epic tale of love, identity and struggle.

cave bear

I liked the premis of the tale. The ways pf the clan are prettycool, this reminded me of the movie Avatar in subtle ways. I developed a conection to the main character, at which point there was some pretty upsetting violence, I was almost tempted to stop reading as it seemed a little unnecessary and I was effected by it. I did finish and Im glad I did. over all it was an enjoyable experience

A good listen

Apart for some unbelievable jumps in the clans understanding, after shocks, conception etc, it was a good book. Not sure how much research was done or where the proof clans/clan gatherings etc was found, but if you can put all of that to one side you will like the book.

A real heroine!

Fascinating tale with vivid descriptions. I was hooked from the start. Beautifully narrated. I have a feeling I’m going to be hearing more of Ayla’s adventures.

Perfect

Absolutely loved this. I read the books many years ago and loved the story of Ayla then. I have really enjoyed immersing myself in her story again in a different way. The narrator is perfect, her faultless presentation brings everything to life and her voice differentiates between the characters so well. Great pronunciation. It has been a joy to listen to this book, looking forward to book 2.

as good to listen to as it is to read yourself.

The characters are alive and real , you can imagine yourself as part of the 'Clan ' or as someone sat at the cave entrance looking in..

Clan of the Cave Bear

I read the series of books when I was a teenager, and have loved returning to the series in audio form. The author has done a massive amount of research into the flora and fauna of the pre-historic times, the application of how herbs could have been used, how hunting could have been developed. I do have to treat it as fantasy at times when she strays from what we have records of (unless she really does think that neanderthals did have ancestral memories) but it doesn't detract from the story for that.
The narrator, Rowena Cooper, does a great job. I find her voice, quite a BBC and 'proper' voice, fits well with the narration. I'm planning on listening to the whole series.

Overwhelmingly wonderful!

You won't regret listening to this epic tale. To read it is one thing but to have it read to you like a kind of bedtime story for adults will have your heart pounding. You will laugh and cry all at once. Thank goodness it's the first of many in this series of prehistoric fiction.
