About this listen
Is a marriage worth saving - whatever the cost?
Coworkers Ruby and Harry are in love - but they’re married to other people. They decide to tell their spouses that their marriages are over and to start a new life together. Ruby has wanted to leave her controlling husband for a while, so she tells him she’s leaving and waits at the hotel where she and Harry are to meet. But Harry never shows up.
Suddenly, Ruby has lost everything. Harry won’t answer her calls, and she’s fired from her job. She finds a cheap apartment in a run-down part of town, all the while wondering what happened to Harry. Just as Ruby thinks she’s hit rock bottom, strange and menacing things start to happen - someone is sneaking into her apartment, and someone is following her home late at night - and she is going to have to fight for her survival.

Loved the story but hated the narration
I am becoming so tired of otherwise good novels being spoiled by poor narration and this has to be another example. Ruby is definitely a simperingly weak woman who leaves her unhappy marriage to run away with her boss - a man she barely knows who is also married. They plan to tell their respective spouses that evening, meet in a hotel and begin their new life together. She does but he fails to show and she spends a weekend alone wondering what has happened to him. Cannot say more but the premise is fascinating and I felt I was in for a treat ..... but that narration spoiled it for me. I did read to the end because the story was good but why on earth do authors allow their novels to be read by such inadequate narrators. Believe me - read it but forget listening!!!!

Wimpy woman makes heavy going in this strange tale
It was an intriguing premise that made me preorder and I have enjoyed the last two Mary Torjussen audiobooks .... but one the main protagonist is just soooooooooooooo weak and wimpy that it made for a very drawn out listen and I felt like shaking her.
Then the narration was taken over by a second woman, who thankfully was much more dynamic and the truth began to unfold.
Sadly though I had lost patience with woman number one (Ruby). Cannot really blame the narrator who breathily began every chapter with a tremulous "Rooooooooooooooooby!" but she just added to the blandness of the character. In fact the most exciting thing about her was her name ... as in Ruby no mates! Yes, she had only one work colleague pal and really no blinking wonder. Even her parents seemed to dislike her and no wonder really as she was just dreary to the power of infinity.
Enough was enough and decided I would not care if Ruby got abducted by aliens, won Miss Universe or grew another head she would still be very dull and life is too short with many cracking thrillers out there I am throwing this fish back!
