Summary

It's the night of the full Cold Moon: the month of December according to the lunar calendar. A young man is found dead in lower Manhattan, the first in a series of victims of a man calling himself the Watchmaker. This killer's obsession with time drives him to plan the murders with the precision of fine timepieces, and the victims die prolonged deaths while an eerie clock ticks away their last minutes on earth.

Lincoln Rhyme, Amelia Sachs, and the rest of the crew are tapped to handle the case and stop the Watchmaker and his partner, Vincent Reynolds, a repulsive character with a special interest in the female victims of the killer.

Amelia is not only Lincoln's eyes and ears at crime scenes on the Watchmaker case, but she's now running her own homicide investigation, her first case as lead detective. The policewoman's unwavering efforts in pursuing the killers of a businessman, who left behind a wife and son, sets into motion clockwork gears of its own, with consequences reaching to people and events that will endanger not only many lives but Lincoln's and Amelia's future together.

My first abridged book

I had never bought an abridged book before but as I couldn't find this book in an unabridged version and had read all the others, I bought it because I wanted the full series. But I wish I had just read the full book instead. The words are there because they are needed to tell the story. I found this very difficult to follow and didn't enjoy it at all. I adore the Lincoln Rhyme books but will never buy an abridged one again.

the worst abridement

I hadn't realised that this book was abridged when I bought it or I would not have done so. To condense a 15 hour long audiobook down to 2 hours is ridiculous. so much of the story is missing. I shall return the book.

Great story, but it's abridged, which spoils it.

Well read, but the abridgement completely spoils the thread of the story, and interferes with the build up of suspense. The result is choppy and hard to follow. This book is an important one in the series, and could really do with being reread in full.

Abridged version

Accidentally purchased the abridged version and hence I’m extremely disappointed! It would be useful if this was made clear in the purchase details, or indeed reflected in the price.

Terrible

So abridged that it doesn’t make any sense. The reader seems to rush the parts that have been randomly selected to stay in and it sounds like it doesn’t have any punctuation! He also seems to forget the voices he’s chosen to do for certain characters as they seem to change/ blend into each other. Waste of money and time.

DON’T BOTHER

So abridged that the story is impossible to follow and it makes no sense even when you know the characters - it becomes meaningless

Awful

Gave up before the end. Deaver cannot be condensed in to 2 hours. The story was unclear and the narration too fast

worst abridging ever

so heavily abridged that the story is almost impossible to follow, this is a shame as it sounded like it had the potential to be really interesting.

Terrible abridging

Will never listen to an abridged version again. I was so confused. Got it to progress with the series which I am loving, and unabridged wasn't available. Really disappointed.

Has this narrator ever heard anyone speaking!?

The story is not one of Deavers best but the narrator is awful. Honestly, save yourself the pain. He reads it like he's in a rush to finish. he reads it so fast it massively distracts from the story, making it difficult to follow. Awful
