Summary

Dallas, November 2, 1963. Wayne Tedrow, Jr., has arrived to kill a man. The fee is $6,000. He finds himself instead in the middle of a cover-up following JFK’s assassination. There follows a hellish five-year ride through the sordid underbelly of public policy via Las Vegas, Howard Hughes, Vietnam, CIA dope dealing, Cuba, sleazy showbiz, racism and the Klan.

This is the 1960s under Ellroy’s blistering lens, the icons of the era mingled with cops, killers, hoods and provocateurs.

Wow

Fabulous follow up to Tabloid. Tough and hard hitting, this always hits the mark. A great book.

Different style

I found the style he wrote this very difficult at first, the short repetitive sentences grated. But as a previous reviewer said you do get used to it.
The actual story is terrific.

The best.

Jeff Harding makes Ellroy's so well-informed, sleazy stories come alive. His J.Edgar voice and accents are perfect, I prefer this audio version to the paperback... but all three stories are the best summation of this awful period ever. Ellroy rules over any JFK or Mafia author.

Maybe better to read

A great story with many intense plot lines. However the writing style and short staccato sentences meant that I found it a little hard to follow as an audio book. Might just be me, but I’d recommend downloading a sample first.

Omg

I thought this book was dreadful - I really have no idea what it was about - I found it awful and pointless. I can normally listen to anything read by Jeff Harding but this was definitely an exception to that rule.

Too much style got in the way of the substance!

I tried, honestly! I enjoyed the first in the series so bought this one, but a whole book of constant repetition of character names was way too much to deal with and so I gave up. And the problem is that it got in the way of the narrative so that the story was impossible to follow. Maybe reading it would have been ok, but the three word sentences with a name repeated in every one...too much for me.

Amazing!

I had started reading this book 3 times but each time lost track of the people. The way Jeff defines the characters is incredible - I have now 'read' it all in a week. The style of the book and the way it is read make this something very special.

Just started on the third book in the trilogy!

So badly written in my humble opinion

3 to 6 word descriptive sentences. Not my cup of tea at all. I just can't get into this style of writing.
