Story
In today's workplace, the traditional boundaries between "work" and "personal" are neither realistic nor relevant. From millennials seeking employment in the sharing economy to Gen Xers telecommuting to Baby Boomers creating a meaningful second act, the line that separates who we are from the work we do is blurrier than ever. The truth is, we don't show up for our jobs as a portion of ourselves - by necessity, we bring both our hearts and our minds to everything we do. In How We Work, Dr. Leah Weiss explains why this false dichotomy can be destructive.

Story
Onward tackles the problem of educator stress, and provides a practical framework for taking the burnout out of teaching. Stress is part of the job, but when 70 percent of teachers quit within their first five years because the stress is making them physically and mentally ill, things have gone too far. Unsurprisingly, these effects are highest in difficult-to-fill positions such as math, science, and foreign languages, and in urban areas and secondary classrooms - places where we need our teachers to be especially motivated and engaged.

Story
Most people only ever rely on their conventional intelligence (IQ) to get them through life, or worse, believe it to be the best indicator for success. For years this was thought to be the case, that IQ was the most accurate predictor of a person's potential, whether it's getting a leg up in your career or simply building better relationships in business/family life. However that is no longer the case. It's now commonly known that Emotional Intelligence (EQ) has the biggest impact here.

Martin Seligman, considered the father of positive psychology, has likened resilience to clearing the weeds from a rose garden, which can reach its potential only if the weeds are kept in check. Human beings face "weeds" of their own: layoffs, health issues, stock-market crashes, threats of terrorism, and natural disasters are all too common. Americans are busier, more stressed, and more anxious and depressed than they were during the Great Depression.

Summary
A powerful, practical guide for cultivating compassion - the scientifically proven foundation for personal achievement and success at work, at home, and in the community.
For decades we've been told the key to prosperity is to look out for number one. But recent science shows that to achieve durable success, we need to be more than just achievers; we need to be compassionate achievers.
New research in biology, neuroscience, and economics has found that compassion - recognizing a problem or caring about another's pain and making a commitment to help - not only improves others' lives; it can transform our own. Based on the most recent studies from a wide range of fields, The Compassionate Achiever reveals the profound benefits of practicing compassion, including more constructive relationships, improved intelligence, and increased resiliency. To help us achieve these benefits, Christopher L. Kukk, the founding director of the Center for Compassion, Creativity and Innovation, shares his unique four-step program for cultivating compassion.
Kukk makes clear that practicing compassion isn't about being a martyr or a paragon of virtue; it's about rejecting rage and indifference and choosing instead to be a thoughtful, caring problem solver. He identifies the skills every compassionate achiever should master - listening, understanding, connecting, and acting - and outlines how to develop each, with clear explanations, easy-to-implement strategies, actionable exercises, and real-world examples.
With The Compassionate Achiever, everyone wins - we can each achieve success in our own lives and create more productive workplaces and healthier, less violent communities.

Me me me
The author has an ego that is out of control. Every situation is illustrated by a "fantastic(al)" story about how amazing the author is as a human being. By the sixth chapter it has become to much. I couldn't listen to how I needed to be like him to be a compassionate achiever.
I'd rather be like me, a somewhat humble achiever.

Not terrible, but not great
There was very little that I could point to in this book that I found disappointing or frustrating, but it also did very little to inspire me. Overall, with so many other great options available, had I known what this book would be like I never would have purchased it.
