About this listen

The greatest classic of angling literature and a unique celebration of the English countryside, Izaak Walton's The Compleat Angler was originally published in 1653. No book, apart from the Bible and the Book of Common Prayer, has been more often reprinted. As a treatise on the art of fishing it has never wholly been superseded. For its advice on the catching and cooking of fish, the rules for baits, and the making of artificial flies, it remains a valuable and engrossing guide. As a graceful and affectionate portrait of rural England its charm is irresistible and in Walton we could not wish for a more congenial companion. Read by Richard Johnson.

Old time angling classic

A lot of fun listening to old angling tips, tales and recipes (yes recipes!) Also a superb reading; listening to this it was easy to feel you were back in the 17th century.

The Art of Fishing

Written in 1653 and still in print only having been sold in volume second to that of the Bible speaks of what a fascinating tome this book is. Possibly more enjoyable for those that fish but I enjoyed the content and explanation which was well delivered by the narrator.

Listening again

I shall be listening again, a great accompaniment to my morning walks around my local lake and can listen to the whole book before my breakfast

Charming Period Piece

This is a really lovely, charming classic. It is beautifully read with period music. You get a little of everything -- fishing techniques, recipes (over a open fire), and some amazingly creative ideas of natural history (the wild inaccuracies add to the charm!). Nicely abridged.

Completely jibberish

Unfortunately this has been read in old English language and it’s pretty incomprehensible in today’s world, I’ve picked up little bits and pieces from it but I really feel as if it would have been a better experience had it been translated into modern tongue.

Abridged

Didn't read as abridged though, at time of review, erroneously labelled unabridged in catalogue.
