Summary
The acclaimed BBC Radio 4 dramatisation of Anthony Trollope's gently satirical tales of provincial life
One of the most respected, successful chroniclers of nineteenth-century life, Anthony Trollope is still widely read and much-loved today. The Barchester Chronicles - witty moral comedies with a wonderful range of characters - are among his most popular tales.
The first in the series, The Warden, finds Rev. Harding forced to question the moral basis of the life he is leading; and in the sequel, Barchester Towers, the Reverend is now plain Mr Harding, bound up in a tale of intrigue, hypocrisy and ambition that will delight the listener.
Dr Thorne is a gripping drama of wealth and wedlock; while Framley Parsonage tells the story of a naive, ambitious young clergyman whose unwise associations bring him to the brink of ruin. The Small House at Allington explores the power of devotion, in the form of Lily Dale’s love for self-seeking Adolphus Crosbie.
Finally, The Last Chronicle of Barset sees the most popular characters from Trollope’s earlier novels, including the Proudies, Lily, Mr Harding and Archdeacon Grantly, reunited in a moving tale of honesty triumphing over hypocrisy.
Nearly twenty hours of ironic, witty and wonderfully written drama is contained in this collection. With a star cast including Brenda Blethyn, Eleanor Bron, Kenneth Cranham, Anna Massey, Leo McKern, Simon Russell Beale, Amanda Root, Alex Jennings, David Haig, Rosemary Leach and Emma Fielding, it is guaranteed to appeal to all fans of Trollope’s comic masterpieces.

Barchester comes alive!
Time I heard a classic whilst I drive, were my thoughts when I purchased this dramatization. From the off I was in another world, the world of the Victorian's. With the many and various goings on acted out superbly by a wonderful cast. I found myself going the long way, just to listen for longer, I even found myself listening whilst walking!! I could not wait to hear what would unfold next. If you think that Clasics are dull I urge you to try this. With the many twists and turns, sadness and happiness, I am sure that you will enjoy 'The Barchester Chronicles'

fantastic and addictive
I though this would be a long audio book perfect for 3 weeks in France, and I wanted to add some culture to my life.
This is a brilliant listen,I was so suprised and totally loved every minute of it,as did my children (which was a suprise, they wanted to listen to Barchester as opposed to dvds and playstations!!!)
Wonderfully written and a tale that is as relavant to today as to the 1860s.I know a Mrs Prudie etc in my life.
This is a must and I usually read and listen to thrillers it was a refreshing, wonderful change that was thought provocating and just so,well brilliant.Beautifully narrated

Delightful new experience
This is my first venture into the classics or a dramatisation. I hesitated because I thought perhaps I should listen to the book read by a narrator, but I'm really glad I chose this. The characters come alive so I feel I have understood their personalities so well. There is also quite a lot of subtle humour in the stories and I shall certainly read some more Anthony Trollope

PURE PLEASURE
This dramatisation was pure pleasure from begining to end. The cream of British actors portraying the idosyncrasies of the British character as portrayed by one of this countries best writers - what utter joy! And so funny too, I had no idea that Trollope was laugh out loud funny.
PS However, I did get a little frustrated with a couple of the subserviant women...

Stunning
An avid Dickens fan up to now, I've always avoided Trollope thinking he was hard-going. How wrong I was. This audio book was my introduction to Trollope and what a fabulous one it is. This is simply a 'must-listen', the dramatisation is superb and the story itself sublime and still oddly pertinent to today. This is one of my favourite Audible downloads to date and one I'm sure I'll listen to again. I must admit I don't usually write reviews leaving this to others but this recording is so good I felt obliged to spread the word. Listen and enjoy.

The Barchester Chronicles
I think many people would find reading the actual book a little dry, but the dramatisation on this audiobook brought the story to life and I couldn't wait for my next free time to listen in.
The whole result was charming.

The Classics at their best - don't miss this one!
I read "The Warden" many years ago and was captivated with the charming writing of Anthony Trollope. I have listened to it this afternoon and cannot wait to enjoy the rest of the Chronicles. As a full-time carer, I don't have enough time to indulge in my favourite hobby of reading, but I can clean the house as I listen to these stories unfolding from a world which is long gone, but where the characters are so alive that they could be in my own living room with me. This is a truly wonderful dramatisation and not to be missed!
