Summary

A splendid and sumptuous historical novel from the internationally best-selling author Philippa Gregory, telling of the early life of Katherine of Aragon.

I was born a princess, destined to be queen, and I know my duty.

1491. Henry VII’s eldest son, Arthur Tudor, Prince of Wales, has been betrothed since childhood to the Spanish princess Katherine of Aragon. Their marriage will cement the alliance Henry Tudor craves to secure his country.

But when Arthur’s sudden death leaves an 11-year-old boy heir to the kingdom, Henry Tudor must choose whether to send Katherine back to Spain or to marry her himself. Katherine has no son from her brief marriage to secure her future; her substantial dowry and his powerful contract are at stake.

Henry has reckoned without the determination of a young woman set on fulfilling her own destiny to be a queen - and the ambition of Prince Harry, the future Henry VIII.

Critic reviews

"One of Gregory's great strengths as a novelist is her ability to take familiar historical figures and flesh them into living breathing human beings. The Constant Princess is a worthy successor to her previous novels about the Tudors." (Daily Express)

"Gregory's research is impeccable which makes her imaginative fiction all the more convincing." (Daily Mail)

"Gregory is great at conjuring a Tudor film-set of gorgeous gowns and golden-lattered dining. She invokes some swoonsome images...while the politics are personal enough to remain pertinent." (DailyTelegraph)

Beautiful novel, excellent narration

There is another version of this novel on Audible which is abridged and at first I bought that version by mistake but it was not enjoyable for me at all. I was very disappointed as I have read a lot from Philippa Gregory but then I realized what the problem was and I returned the abridged version and bought this full one.
I was very happy with the exchange. Not only is it incomparably more enjoyable in its full version but the narration is far better! Katrina Fernandez being of Spanish speaking origin, the accent is completely authentic, which was not at all the case in the abridged version.
As always with Philippa Gregory, I was completely immersed in this book, it is a riveting story as well as beautifully written history.

A brave gutsy woman

An enthralling account of the early years of Catherine of Aragon. Not the ageing and unwanted Queen sue planted by Anne Boleyn, but Catalina, the Warrior Princess with a will of steel.

Exceptional narration

In true Phillipa Gregory style, she pulls the reader into the perspective of the main character and creates a tale around historic figures, times and events which feels as if it were the truth.
The more of the authors books that you read / listen to you realise that she does this successfully for each book's main character(s) so in effect she represents a lot of historical characters from completely different view points yet each story seems realistic and as if it were the only truth.
In my opinion, it doesn't matter which order you listen to Ms. Geegory's books if you have a vague awareness of the times.
I always listen to Phillipa Gregory audiobooks straight through because they are far too intriguing to dilute with other books (high praise indeed from a listener who usually has 3 or 4 audiobooks on the go!)
This particular book was enhanced by the excellent narration. The narrator had me totally hooked with her accents and change of pace with different characters. Very talented!

Excellent reader

Loved the narration on this book. The actor gives us a strong, likeable, admirable heroine with just a touch of vulnerability. A really interesting look at the lesser considered period of Katherines young life and its profound affect on her adult life.

History anew

Truly refreshing perspective on the quintessential wronged wife.
Story of Tudor girl power.
Well worth a listen challenging the view of fat Harry from the beginning.
