About this listen

A beautiful Italian girl driving home in an open top sports car, a little boy playing on a South Coast beach and the senior steward of the Jockey Club on his way to a press reception in Baltimore. One after the other they suffer the same nightmare ordeal - kidnapping. But there is one thing connecting these particular cases. For the Italian girl is a jockey, and the little boy an only son of a racehorse owner.

A picture of the person behind this international chain of crime starts to emerge - a lover of Verdi, a man with a cool and calculating brain and an aficionado of the racing world. Andrew Douglas, brought in to advise and help the victims and their families, proceeds with all his customary diplomacy and courage. Only to find himself playing a dangerous part: the role usually reserved for his clients.

Different from most other a

A change of pace and scene set
Normally I think of Dick Francis books as light reading/good for traveler.
This was set at a fast er pace and set in a different environment.
Very information and interesting.

Quiet but building to a twisted end

A good DF, .The hero slowly pieces elements of kidnappings together, but forgets that his successes give his identity to his quarry.

One of his best

Really enjoyed this slightly different Francis novel. Interesting plot with the usual detailed tension - and brilliantly read.

A well- constructed story, skilfully read.

What did you like most about The Danger (Unabridged)?

The plot. It was a good yarn - and although most of the Dick Francis plotlines are repetitive, the stories are always well-crafted and enjoyable.

What did you like best about this story?

The pace. 3 separate plot events interwove nicely and the characterisation was good. Francis's heros are always principled, minimalist and tough but with a romantic heart and vulnerable soul, and his heroines physically frail and feminine but admirable. This was true in this story and the villain given more depth than others he has developed.

What does Tony Britton bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

He has a beautiful voice anyway, the quintessential traditional English gentleman - and that's exactly the type of hero that Francis has drawn as his narrator, so he works superbly well as the voice of the storyteller.

His voicing of the women could be a bit shrill, but not gratingly so and he managed to make the Italian accents quite credible.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I could feel the tension at various aspects of the story - even let out a gasp at one point,

Any additional comments?

If you want a good listen, with a great yarn delivered in style - this would be an excellent choice.
