Summary

In 1951 John Wyndham published his novel The Day of the Triffids to moderate acclaim. Fifty-two years later, this horrifying story is a science-fiction classic, touted by The Times (London) as having 'all the reality of a vividly realised nightmare'.

Bill Masen, bandages over his wounded eyes, misses the most spectacular meteorite shower England has ever seen. Removing his bandages the next morning, he finds masses of sightless people wandering the city. He soon meets Josella, another lucky person who has retained her sight, and together they leave the city, aware that the safe, familiar world they knew a mere 24 hours before is gone forever.

But to survive in this post-apocalyptic world, one must survive the Triffids, strange plants that years before began appearing all over the world. The Triffids can grow to over seven feet tall, pull their roots from the ground to walk and kill a man with one quick lash of their poisonous stingers. With society in shambles, they are now poised to prey on humankind. Wyndham chillingly anticipates bio-warfare and mass destruction, 50 years before their realisation, in this prescient account of Cold War paranoia.

About the author: John Wyndham Parkes Lucas Benyon Harris was born in 1903, the son of a barrister. He tried a number of careers including farming, law, commercial art and advertising, and started writing short stories, intended for sale, in 1925. From 1930 to 1939 he wrote stories of various kinds under different names, almost exclusively for American publications, while also writing detective novels. During the war he was in the Civil Service and then the Army. In 1946 he went back to writing stories for publication in the USA and decided to try a modified form of science fiction, a form he called 'logical fantasy'.

The Day of the Triffids meets The Italian Job

I enjoyed hearing this novel, which I read very many years ago at school, but I had forgotten most of it. Although for the most part I enjoyed Kingsley Ben-Adir's narration I did not think he was very good at creating female characters. Also most of his male voices were very reminiscent of Michael Caine in The Italian Job. That said, it was worthwhile revisiting this book again, especially as our contemporary coronarvirus infested times sometimes make one contemplate what the end of days might be like: John Wyndham gives us an interesting vision of such a time.

Excellent, even after so many years

I really enjoyed this audiobook, it 's maybe 50 year since I first read the book and I still enjoyed it - maybe these days Covid is the modern equivalent of the Triffids! Narration was great, well paced.

Chilling

I had forgotten the story. Narrated in a dull monotone but it kind of suited the story and set the scene. Actually it's more about a future apocalypse than the Triffids themselves. Thought privoking

Some books stand the test of time.....

Others don’t. Terrible old fashioned sexist overtones throughout. The narration is surprising at first with its londonesque glottlestopping style but I think once I got used to it it made a nice change.

a Tale of its time still relevant!

This tale well known by its title it's clearly written in the world of the 1950s. However gloss over some of the details which Wyndham didn't know and this could be a story of today.

this is the story of abuse of our power over nature which is all to apparent in this time of climate change, pandemics and over population. a classic tale of survival against the odds laced with a little bit of romance told in the gentle language of its time.

it is fascinating to revisit John Wyndham's imagined world of the future with the hindsight off 60 years. there are so many things that can be seen which are not as he imagined them. I am non the less struck by how prescient his story telling was and am really glad to have re read his work.

I recommend this book.

Awful narrator

I was looking forward to hearing this old story from my youth, I remember the (awful now but scary then) tv show.
But sadly, even with adjusting the speed, I just can’t get on with this narrator.

Shame about the narration

One of my favourite books. Unfortunately the narrator wasn't up to the job. Monotonous tone and bad diction.

Great post-apocalyptic fiction

The narrator was a bit shouty. At times it worked but at times it just felt too loud and aggressive. It's a great story though.

A true classic!

One of my all time favourite stories but I felt the narrator had the wrong voice for the main character.
