Summary
Homicide Detective Max Rupert never fully accepted his wife's death, even when he believed that a reckless hit and run driver was the cause. But when he learns that in fact she was murdered, he devotes himself to hunting down her killers. Most of his life he had thought of himself as a decent man. But now he's so consumed with thoughts of retribution that he questions whether he will take that last step and enact the vengeance he longs for.
On a frozen lake near the US-Canadian border, he wrestles with a decision that could change his life forever, as his hatred threatens to turn him into the kind of person he has spent a career bringing to justice.

Compelling read from start to finish
Make sure you read them in order!! Want to read more from this brilliant author who is new to me.
After reading these books, I'm spoilt. Nothing else comes close for total absorption. Eskens is a very talented writer and the narrator makes the writing even more absorbing. I can't recommend highly enough.

Depressing
It’s like popping a pimple … I knew it had to come to a head so didn’t really expect it to be uplifting !
Hoping the next one finds him back on a better path

Enjoyable
I found the first and third books in this series to be the most enjoyable. Nevertheless this book is definitely worth a listen. So glad I stumbled upon this author. I have enjoyed getting to know Max.

Study of cold
I enjoyed the 3rd of the series a little less than the other 2 as there were fewer turns in the plot, but as a piece of writing that puts you in a place at a certain moment in the character’s life and his literal physical situation in a moment in time. It was stunning. I was cold in the middle of summer

Rupert the Wolf!
When RC Bray is narrating a book you know that it at least isn't going to sound dull. When the man himself describes a book as one of the best thrillers he has read then that's more than enough to make me sit up and take note!
And this does not disappoint at all, it really does live up to that kind of billing. Unbeknownst to me when I chose it, this is a continuation of an existing story from previous books. Max Rupert, an experienced homicide detective is haunted by his wife's death and seeks to discover the truth behind it. It genuinely worked for me as a stand-alone but I would imagine that reading the previous books would flesh out the characters and add to the enjoyment.
It's a short, sharp and fast-paced thriller. From the brooding, dark and very cold opening it moves on at considerable speed, never dragging. In fact maybe some of Rupert's discoveries may come to him just a little easily. That aside though it's high quality writing and we're treated to a classic dual timeline albeit covering only three days in total.
It's a novel of discovery and revenge, well worthy of a strong recommendation!
