About this listen
From one of our most important contemporary writers, The Doll-Master and Other Tales of Terror is a bold, haunting collection of six stories.
In the title story, a young boy becomes obsessed with his cousin's doll after she tragically passes away from leukemia. As he grows older, he begins to collect "found dolls" from the surrounding neighborhoods and stores his treasures in the abandoned carriage house on his family's estate. But just what kind of dolls are they?
In "Gun Accident", a teenage girl is thrilled when her favorite teacher asks her to house-sit, even on short notice. But when an intruder forces his way into the house while the girl is there, the fate of more than one life is changed forever.
In "Equatorial", set in the exotic Galápagos, an affluent American wife experiences disorienting assaults on her sense of who her charismatic husband really is, and what his plans may be for her.
In The Doll-Master and Other Tales of Terror, Joyce Carol Oates evokes the “fascination of the abomination” that is at the core of the most profound, the most unsettling, and the most memorable of dark mystery fiction.

Great title and cover. Well written.
I was lured in by the ingenious title and interesting cover. They both promised Tales of Terror and the first tale, the Doll-Master was a good start, at the very least it was a cautionary tale to not gender stereotype your children’s toys!!!
I thought the remaining stories were all well written but rather predictable. Each seemed to follow a similar structure of leaving the reader to formulate the obvious conclusion themselves.
My favourites were Doll-Master and possibly Big Momma, but I’m sure that says far more about me than anything else. 🤔

Good stories
This is the first I've listened to this Author, and though I enjoyed the stories, I didn't enjoy the way some were written or the male narrator.

Intelligent and literary
The most well-written (I mean it is JCO so I was expecting quality writing) horror I’ve listened to in quite a while.

Very impressed
Thoroughly enjoyed these twisted tales. Quite original suspenseful yarns that kept me hooked. Very well written. They were expertly narrated too.

First class
Oates is a master- the only point of deception: pythons don’t have eyelids, as described…

zero terror zero thrills
An appalling book. Just glad it didn't cost me a credit. Doesn't deserve to even be available. I can only assume the other reviews are from the authors.
