Summary

Harry Bosch is facing the end of the line. He's been put on the DROP - Deferred Retirement Option Plan - and given three years before his retirement is enforced. Seeing the end of the mission coming, he's anxious for cases. He doesn't have to wait long.

First a cold case gets a DNA hit for a rape and murder which points the finger at a 29-year-old convicted rapist who was only eight at the time of the murder. Then a city councilman's son is found dead - fallen or pushed from a hotel window - and he insists on Bosch taking the case despite the two men's history of enmity. The cases are unrelated, but they twist around each other like the double helix of a DNA strand. One leads to the discovery of a killer operating in the city for as many as three decades; the other to a deep political conspiracy that reached back into the dark history of the police department.

Best Yet

I've got to confess to being a Michael Connelly fan, but this is the best yet, unputdownable!

Up to the usual standard

It's extraordinary how Michael Connelly keeps up such a high standard. This Harry Bosch story is just as good as the others, with the usual twists and turns. The ending is rather downbeat - but this is a small complaint, set against the tight plotting and gritty realism of the rest of the book. Is Harry approaching the end of his career? Let's hope not.

It is well read - although there are a number of short and entirely superfluous musical interludes which do nothing of any value.

Terrible terrible narration

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
I haven't finished this book and it is only the fast-paced story that has kept my interest. the narrations is quite simply the worst I have ever heard. He sounds like he is reading it for the first time verrrry verrry slowly!
I bought the book because I like Michael Connolly's books and harry Bosch, but I will check carefully for this narrator in the future as i would rather watch paint dry than listen to his painful renderings!

If you’ve listened to books by Michael Connelly before, how does this one compare?
Story much the same. Narration worse

How could the performance have been better?
Where do I start?????
Faster, snappier, better pronunciation, sounding interested

Was The Drop worth the listening time?
I am listening in the car so not actually wasting my time although I undoubtably have better narrated books to listen to

Any additional comments?
Someone should let Michael Connolly know how awful this narrator is!!

Harry Bosch - Love him, BUT!

I have listened to almost every Michael Connelly novel and really enjoy the Harry Bosch character.
But, I find the latest narrator, Len Cariou, has a voice which lacks subtlety and is way too gruff, especially when narrating female voices. No doubt the thinking of the commisioning company was that gruff is macho - it isn't necessarily! Fantastic writing, as usual, but the enjoyment of this book was spoilt for me. Dick Hill was a far better narrator for this series of books.

Terrible Narrator

I barely managed to finish this book. Normally I really enjoy Connelly but this narrator was truly terrible. At times I was wondering if he could actually read. The entire story was difficult to follow due to the intonations being totally in the wrong places. I will not buy another one of these with this narrator.

Harry Bosh is the man

Great story, typical Bosh. Gripping story full of twists and turns. George Ervings suicide was a gotcha as I was sure it was going to end up as a murder.

Possibly the best detective series I've ever read/heard

If you're new to Harry Bosch my advice would be, don't start here! I think the first book was The Black Echo (might be wrong) and whilst you could easily listen to The Drop without the full character history you'd be missing the icing from the cake.

Bosch is just about as realistic as it's possible to be regarding his hot headed and impulsive moments and his drive to get his work done. But the author manages to maintain an air of magic in all the authenticity and procedure.

The performance and post production is an absolute leap forward in audio books and whilst I don't really get jazz music the way Bosch connects to his music and the brief but effective musical interludes really help to highlight the drama in the books.

5 stars all round.

great book narrator not so much

great story couldn't turn it off
only down side that the narrator was a wee bit too gruff and inflexible in the voice side of things but I would recommend this book

The true feeling of horror at the crime.

A great balance of hard nosed detective work and the reality of personal relationships that make the work worthwhile.

Bosch fan

Great listen again and again. Wish the TV series would return. Len and Titus are great performers.
