About this listen

Professor Bryce MacLeod has devoted his entire life to environmentalism. But how effective can he be in saving the planet when he can’t even get his surly neighbor to separate his recycling?

Former Queen’s Enforcer Mal Kendrick doesn’t think his life could get any worse: He’s been exiled from Faerie with a cursed and useless right hand. When he’s not dodging random fae assassins in the Outer World, he’s going toe-to-toe with his tree-hugging neighbor. And when he discovers that the tree hugger is really a druid, he’s certain the gods have it in for him - after all, there’s always a catch with druids. Then he’s magically shackled to the man and expected to instruct him in Supernatural 101.

All right, now things couldn’t possibly get worse.

Until a mysterious stranger offers a drunken Mal the chance to gain back all he’s lost - for a price. After Mal accepts, he discovers the real catch: an ancient secret that will change his and Bryce’s life forever.

Ah, what the hells. Odds are they won’t survive the week anyway.

The Fae Out of Water stories can be enjoyed in series order, or enjoyed on their own. Word count: 91,200.

The Druid Next Door

This is the second in this Fae series of books and although I struggled a little in the first couple of chapters with the references to past events and characters from the previous book, Cutie and the Beast, I soon got into the flow of things.
Bryce and Mal are complicated characters as is the storyline.
I didn’t really connect with the characters or the storyline, I’m not sure if that was because I didn’t read/listen to the Cutie and the Beast first or if it just wasn’t for me despite Joel Leslie’s excellent narration.

Sparks fly when fae and druid must join forces

His right hand rendered useless due to a curse, fae Mal ends up in a confrontation with his neighbor, Bryce, who turns out to be unaware of his own druid nature. In short order, however, they are magically tethered together and involved in tasks put to them by a mysterious third party, with the fates of Faerie, and Mal, in the balance. This was a very enjoyable tale of two men who struggle to understand what their true natures are when they are together, and the sexual and emotional pull they feel toward each other, while attempting to stay alive. The plot is a bit involved, but I was on board for all the twists and turns. The narration by Joel Leslie is nothing short of brilliant. Recommended!

Unexpected Soulmates

The Druid Next Door is the second book in the Fae Out of Water series and a fantastic addition to the series. This book should not be read as a standalone since the events in the second book follows immediately from the first book.

I thought the plot of this book was really unique, and loved how E.J. Russell incorporated the traditional fairy and folk tales into her worldbuilding but did it in such a distinctive manner that it made the story feel fresh and fascinating. The characters were also well crafted and with a lot of depth and layers. The romance was sweet and spicy with a lot of steamy, sexy moments.

The audiobook was narrated by Joel Leslie who did a wonderful job with the narration. The characters were voiced perfectly and I really loved the performance Joel gave. It was engaging and entertaining. Pair that up with a well done audiobook production, I found this to be a great listening experience.

Another great adventure

EJ Russel created a super world and characters. The second installment of Fae Out of Water is just as good as the original. Loved the adventure Bryce and Mal takes, although I did want to strangle Mal a few times for causing Bryce unnecessary angst, but that's how we have learned the brothers to be. Joel Leslie did a fantastic job with the narration. Now the wait for the next installment.

Fun to listen to.

This was fun. I didn't enjoy it as much as book one but I do think this is shaping up to be a good series. Joel does a great job bringing these two to life. This continues on from book one so you need to have read or listened to that one first to really enjoy this story.

Love Druids!

Mel will crack you up and make you want to hug him until everything is better. Bryce is his perfect counterpart and is fantastic on his own. The twists and turns will cause you to grin and you will find yourself needing more from this world.

So much to love!

The second book in Russell’s Fae Out of Water series truly has so much to love about it. There’s a ton of humor, some wonderful worldbuilding, and enough action to keep you on the edge of your seat. I loved Mal in the first book and his triumphant return was even better than expected. And Bryce definitely held his own and added so much to the story. Overall an amazing second book for an overall wonderful series.
