About this listen

London 1814... Drake, Duke of Manchester is searching the Marriage Mart for a perfect bride. He wants a woman who is poised, sophisticated, and worthy of the title Duchess. But most of all, he wants a woman who does not want the useless emotion of love.

Socially awkward Miss Penelope Clayton isn't meant for marriage. A serious botanist, she has no desire to wed, so being forced by her guardian to participate in the Season to find a husband is torture. She'll never fit in with the ton, especially if they discover she's been pretending to be a man within the scientific community.

As Drake's family makes over Penelope, turning her from naive bluestocking to enchanting debutante, he is put upon to introduce her to society and eligible bachelors. Despite dance lessons and new gowns, Penelope is the opposite of poised and sophisticated as she stumbles from one mishap to the next. Why then, does he find it so hard to resist her?

Story ok, narrator terrible

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

The book was ok, nothing special, but not dreadful either.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

The interaction with the sister. Could have been more of that!

Would you be willing to try another one of Billie Fulford-Brown’s performances?

No, I am definitely only giving her another try by accident.

Was The Duke's Quandary worth the listening time?

Since I was doing housework it was ok, I would not read it as a book without being able to do something else simultaneously.

Any additional comments?

There was a review commenting on the duke not recognizing his wife, that was not in this story.

Narrator grates the ears

I couldn’t concentrate in the story as the narrator grates on my ears. I gave up when I realised I was on chapter 3 and had no idea of who the characters were because the narrator’s accents and character voices were just too irritating.

A Duke of Manchester

This is so ridiculous that it "beggers belive". Manchester was and is a Industrial City, there was never a Baron, Viscount, Earl, Marquis let alone Duke of Manchester. It was never a possibility, if you were given a title you chose a rural name.
Everything after that becomes serial, a parallel universe
The narrator indicates from her accents, that there are Americans involved.

Voices

So difficult to make out the Dukes voice very feminine. I found it hard telling which one was his, not as expected spoilt the story for me.
