Summary

To the Jockey Club, the racing world would be a better place without Julius Apollo Filmer. An expert in corruption with a devastating line in witness intimidation, and proving to be a slippery character to put behind bars. Baffled, they call in undercover security agent Tor Kelsey to keep an unflinching eye on Filmer and his associates. A mission that takes him from the finest of English racecourses to the wild Canadian interior, on a luxury transcontinental train journey to end them all. On board, a troupe of actors are playing out a murder mystery to amuse their wealthy passengers. Ideal cover for a secret investigator with secrets of his own. And ideal cover, as it turns out, for an ice cool blackmailer with murder on his mind.

Such a shame

Such a shame - the story is very good but the quality of the recording is really dreadful in places. At the beginning of some chapters and sections within the chapters the narrator's voice is distorted, and he also sounds breathless at other times. For a large part of the book there is aggravating background noise, but not loud enough to say what exactly it is. I managed to listen to the whole book but it took some effort. After a couple of days deliberation i decided to return it as there's no way I would listen to it again. Since then I've checked reviews of this authors audio books and have seen a similar comments re quality. Such as shame as I would have liked to purchase more. Perhaps the time has come to re-record them?

Great Story, terrible quality recording

Another excellent story from Francis. Which unfortunately you have to listen to from a terrible quality of recording. If you were to buy this as a real paper book from a store it would be in the reduced bin because it was water damaged of similar and so being sold at a reduced price to compensate for it's quality.

Still a great book, and great performance

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

The story is great, as you would expect from Dick Francis. I read it years ago and thoroughly enjoyed listening to it in 2017. His work ages very well. Tony Britton reads it wonderfully. The problem with it is that the quality of the audio file is poor. It speeds up and slows down, making Tony Britton sound alternately asleep or manic. This is a fault in the production, not in the reading, which is excellent.

Would you be willing to try another one of Tony Britton’s performances?

Give this one a miss....

Oh dear, having read many Dick Francis books since I was a teenager, I decided to join Audible which I have been enjoying for almost a year, all my credits going on Dick Francis novels read by Tony Britton. I have thoroughly enjoy them all. But there is one exception; 'The Edge'. It is so dreary & I could not recommend it to anyone ! There is none of the usual excitement and the plot was simply not up to the normal standard of Mr Francis.
Don't waste a credit on this one !

Loved it!

I have read many Dick Francis books, this was my favourite , a clever plot that kept me entertained throughout . Yes the narrative was a bit iffy at times but Tony Britten seems to narrate all of them so he must be getting tired !

In my view, the best Dick Francis ever wrote.

A spellbinding and majestic story, that was only slightly spoiled by the quality of some of the recording.

Another stunner from Francis

Dick Francis rarely disappoints me. This is one of my favourites among his novels. As usual, his central character is a man of decency and integrity, and immensely likeable; I particularly enjoyed this one's relationships with his work colleagues and others, and the mature and balanced way in which he deals with his wealth, not allowing it to interfere with his life, which he wants to count for something. He is tenacious in the face of danger, and it is gratfying to see the villain progressing unknowingly towards his defeat.

The Canadian backdrop is a delight. Dick Francis has an obvious love for the country and people, making this a heart-warming novel.

Enjoyable in the extreme!
