Summary

London, England, 1840: Evangeline Stokes loses her position as a governess when she finds herself pregnant out of wedlock. After being accused of assault and of theft, she is committed to Newgate Prison, then to a prison ship bound for Australia. On board, she strikes up a friendship with Hazel, sentenced to seven years for stealing a silver spoon.

Hobart Town, Australia, 1840: Mathinna is the orphaned daughter of the chief of the Lowreenne tribe. Adopted by the new governor of Tasmania and brought to Hobart to live with the family, she is treated more like a curiosity than a child. These three women - Evangeline, Hazel and Mathinna - will all become part of the story of the creation of a new society in the land beyond the seas....

Great Book for a Sunday afternoon

Contrary to other people's reviews about the narrator, I found her to be easy to listen to, and with the Australian accent, it felt right as the book is set in Australia.
The story itself isn't so much of a page-turner or a need to get to the end, but more of a journey and the setting was just suitable for a rainy Sunday afternoon. I enjoyed it in its entirety.

Distracting narrator

I found this narrators attempts at different accents really detracted from my enjoyment of the book, they were terrible & completely unidentifiable

Not as good as expected

The story had potential but fizzled out too fast. Not really worth reading as no depth and characters are few and fleeting.

Mediocre at best and destroyed by narration.

I have listened to books read by this narrator, which she has read well. Unfortunately, her attempts at any other accent other than her native Australian is murderous to listen to. With only 2 hours left, I just couldn’t persist to the end. Her narration of all the accents is stilted and forced.
