Summary

Jack Solomon is a messenger of death. Working in the fractured remains of Yugoslavia, his task is to identify the victims of ethnic cleansing and to tell families that their loved ones are gone. Years of working in the killing fields have desensitised the former London policeman to the horrors of war, but when a truck containing 26 bodies is pulled from a lake, Solomon is unable to walk away from the case.

He sets out to find the only survivor of the massacre, a young girl on the run from the killers. From the brothels of Sarajevo to the high-stakes world of Internet prostitution, Solomon discovers that the killers are closer to home than he thinks....

Challenging subject matter

I still find SL's ability to create a story fascinating.
This is a gentle slow burn, with underlying overtones of intrigue and menace. All of his stories have a twist in the tail, but even though I was looking for it "I wasn't expecting that!"
Gentle pace compared to many other of SL's book, but the tension and intrigue build steadily from the start
Running out of his books to listen too now!

Sordid and Violent

What did you like best about The Eyewitness? What did you like least?

The characters were well defined and came to life but I found the whole story sordid and violent. I suspect the author had done a lot of research around the subject and I don't doubt the realism, however I found it a depressing read.

What could Stephen Leather have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

I don't think the author could have made this book more enjoyable for me given the subject matter. It was all to real for me .

Have you listened to any of Seán Barrett’s other performances? How does this one compare?

No

If this book were a film would you go see it?

No

Top Story

A different topic covered once again in a highly effective way by Stephen Leather. Our hero is a mild mannered investigator who attacks his case with verve, meets more than his fair share of hurdles at every corner and I couldn't put it down. I was wary of a new narrator but I needn't have been: Sean was excellent!

Good story bit tough at times but all the better for it really, nice twist at the end slightly obvious but ok
Well worth a go

Fabulous

Great story and great narration. Sean Barrett is one of the best narrators out there and though this is my first book by Stephen Leather, it will not be the last.

Excellent

Stephen Leather does it again, I have listened to 30+ of his books now and thoroughly enjoyed all but one. The subject matter is uncomfortable but very real in today's world and the way it has been handled is thought provoking. Once again an impressive performance by SB who brings the characters to "life".

A great story well narrated

This was a difficult subject matter but the delivery was considered and challenging, producing a thriller that left me guessing all of the way.
The characters were always in the shades of grey, that most of us exist in, (although not to some of these extremes). They were established in a way that I ‘cared’ for them.
The performance was excellent, Sean Barratt delivers with authority suitable to the story.
