About this listen

Francis Urquhart’s eventful career as Prime Minister comes to a spectacular end in the final volume in the Francis Urquhart trilogy – now reissued in audio.

He schemed his way to power in ‘House of Cards’ and had a memorable battle of wills with the new king in ‘To Play the King’. Now Francis Urquhart is about to take his place in the record books as the longest-serving Prime Minister this century. Yet it seems the public is tiring of him at last, and the movement to force him from power is growing. But Urquhart is not yet ready to be driven from office. If the public demand new blood, that is precisely what he will give them…

Francis Urquhart goes out in a blaze of glory in this final volume in the irresistible story of the most memorable politician of the decade.

Critic reviews

‘A triumphant return… The best book of the three. The action is unflagging, the characterization razor-sharp, the satirical barbs at politics and politicians unfailingly accurate. Urquhart’s last days in Downing Street are as compelling as Mrs Thatcher’s. What a brilliant creation F.U. is.’
Sunday Telegraph

‘Razor-sharp and merciless… One thing is certain: F.U. will be remembered for much longer than the name of many a real Prime Minister.’
Daily Mail

‘Magnificent… this book has it all.’

Superb

An excellent ending to a brilliant trilogy. The books seem as relevant today as they were when they were written. The parallels with recent government and europhobic politics is especially striking. Samuel West's performance is outstanding.

British politics

I enjoyed reading the 3 books of Michael Dobbs. Very much true in British politics. The back stabbing, dishonesty and the sex.
The story is most enjoyable. Sam West was such a passionate narrator. He uses his great actor skills to interpret the story.10 out of 10 for Sam West.

so pleased I stayed with the book

I found the last part of this trilogy quite hard going although the narration was very good all through. Glad that I listened until the end.

Great story well read

I thoroughly enjoyed this trilogy. The writing is good, the story both horrifying and funny with a clever ending. Very Shakespearian. Samuel West captures the characters well and gives a first class performance.

Pity about the background story

The fist two books deserved a better final storyline .he deserved a better end rather than being pilloried for doing his duty long ago.too much emphasis on the subversive causes. But well written and I guess we love our heroes to prevail right to the end!

Not as good as the other two books in the series

I felt this book lacked something but having read the other two books I had to finish the series

Far too long

Plenty of the usual skullduggery in government but this time, far too much depended upon the political problems of Cyprus. On and on we are kept informed, led back into the past and for me, the novel lost its pace and depth and even the wonderful tones of Samuel West could not comfort me. Unlike the glorious House of Cards which is such a pleasure to listen to or to see in the TV series, this was a delight in the latter but tedious in the reading.
