About this listen
A moving story of love, loss and family secrets set in Dorset and southern Italy from the author of The Villa.
Amid the sun-soaked hills of southern Italy lies the Romano family olive grove, where Lara lives with her daughter Rose and her granddaughter Bea.
Lara has spent a lifetime trying to forget the traumatic events that led to her desperate escape from Dorset seventy years ago. But when she sees Bea—a passionate horticulturalist most at home in nature—being swept off her feet by Matteo, a handsome and charismatic restaurateur, Lara fears her granddaughter is in danger of making the same mistake as Lara did all those years ago.
Remembering a promise she once made, Lara asks Bea to travel to Dorset to restore her family's long-lost garden. Bea is torn. She would love to find out more about the mystery of her beloved grandmother's past. But if she leaves Italy, will Matteo wait for her? And when she arrives at the house in Dorset—what will she find?
Meanwhile back in Italy, an old flame from Rose's past reappears, threatening to expose a secret that could tear the heart out of the Romano family for good.

Enjoyed it.
A nice story and unusally 3 different narrators, and that was the problem, two were good but the one reading Rose was too close to the microphone and I heard (loudly) every breath she took which was really distracting!

Gripping story
Loved this book. Very similar in style to Santa Montefiore as a writer enjoyed the way the stories of the different periods were together.

wasted what felt like 3 years getting through this
I was so looking forward to listening to this offering but, oh my,,oh my, I thought I'd be dead before I finished. Why the author insisted on making all the female characters so insipid and weak, is beyond me. There was so much repitition, I was screaming at the author to get on with it. 8 hours prattling could be lost without harming the plot. The narration of the Italian segments was periodically awful with audible gulps of air being taken, it drove me to distraction. What dreadful editing. I guess word for word it is value for money just thousands too many of them for my liking.
