About this listen

Captain Jack Aubrey, RN, arrives in the Dutch East Indies to find himself appointed to the command of the fastest and best-armed frigate in the Navy. He and his friend Stephen Maturin take passage for England in a despatch vessel. But the War of 1812 breaks out while they are en route. Bloody actions precipitate them both into new and unexpected scenes where Stephen's past activities as a secret agent return on him with a vengeance.

I love this series, but this one wasn't my favourite.

A bit slow going with not much story
Just a bit lacking compared to the last two books which were great.

The best book in the series so far

I’ve enjoyed this book more than any other on the series so far and they’ve all been good. The final chapter is outstanding. The narration, flawless.

brilliant series of books.

Very well read , which makes all the difference. The only reason I haven't given the story 5 stars is because it's not my favourite in the series. Still dam good though

Thoroughly enjoyed this book

Enjoyed this book, especially the mixing of fact with fiction, the battle between the Shannon and the Chesapeake being the climax, I was disappointed that it ended so abruptly at the end of the battle. Having read a number of accounts of this duel I wanted more which hopefully I will obtain from the next book. Highly recommended a good well read book that suits my tastes anyway.

One of my favourite of the series

The Fortune of War contains all the best elements of the Aubrey/Maturin books. Action, adventure on land and sea with the characteristic relationships struggles and victories of the main characters.
