Summary

Fleur is beautiful, unscrupulous, and has a large wardrobe of black designer suits. With the help of The Times announcements page, she gate-crashes the funerals and memorial services of the wealthy, preying on rich, vulnerable men. She charms her way into their lives and onto their platinum credit cards, takes what she can, and then moves swiftly on.

When Richard, a dull but wealthy businessman, meets Fleur at his wife's memorial service, he's bowled over. Gradually Fleur works her spell on Richard's family - transforming their lives while she moves in on their wealth. But she finds herself lingering longer than she meant to....

OK story totally destroyed by bizarre, whackey narration.

The story wasn’t too bad & didn’t proceed in a predictable, told you so way. The narration was quite like nothing I’ve ever heard. Very, very odd. And inflections in all the wrong places. It was so bad I nearly stopped listening. I got used to it as the story unfolded & I wanted to read on to the end.

I didn’t expect to love this

But I did. I think it’s hard to do this sort of story in a way that feels fresh and moving, but this writer delivers in spades. Off to look for more!

Not a party I would ever gatecrash!!

I love Sophie Kinsella and without exception I have loved her books. This however was terrible. The main character had no substance what so ever and the story came to nothing beyond an obvious and predictable ending. I chose this book as when I read an overview it sounded very different to Sophie's usual books and there was a promise of some big reveal which would unravel throughout the story. I have to say this was the only reason I kept on reading in the vain hope that this story would somehow have some kind of exciting plot twist or that there would be some kind of explanation as to why she is such a cold calculating nasty person........ but... there isn't or a least this did not come across to me in the slightest. All this wasn't helped by the shockingly bad narration!! It was awful, the voices she put on for different characters where annoying and the accents where embarrassingly bad. Don't give up on Sophie Kinsella her other books i've read are fabulous. I can only imagine this book was a result of a need to fulfill some kind of publishing contract and not through the want to tell this story. As it's awful awful AWFUL!!!!

He said, she said....

Narrator could have put more oomph into the story. Was a tad dull with some points being he said, she said, he said..
last 15 minutes were the best sadly.

A little disappointed

I have to say that I gave up on this book a quarter of the way through. I wasn't a fan of the performance in general which I found to be a little stiff with no personality and there was an awful drawl to it which I found hard to listen to. I am a huge fan of Sophie Kinsella's work, but I'm not so keen so far on my first encounter with Madeleine Wickham. Maybe I will try it again at some point if I am stuck without something else to go to first.

Easy listen.

It's a credit to the author that despite the horrid nature of the main character you care what happens. I enjoyed this story.

a little too much dark for me

I was a fan of Kinsella so I wanted to try her other books but this one were too dark and cynique for me.

The caracters were too cynicals for me, even if they change at the end.

However it well written and well read by Katherine Kellgren.
