Summary
The moment I heard how McAra died I should have walked away. I can see that now...
The narrator of Robert Harris's gripping new novel is a professional ghostwriter - cynical, mercenary, and with a nice line in deadpan humour. Accustomed to working with fading rock stars and minor celebrities, he jumps at the chance to ghost the memoirs of Britain's former prime minister, especially as it means flying to the American resort of Martha's Vineyard in the middle of winter and finishing the book in the seclusion of a luxurious house.
But it doesn't take him long to realise he has made a terrible mistake. His predecessor on the project died in circumstances that were distinctly suspicious, and the ex-prime minister turns out to be a man with secrets in his past that are returning to haunt him - secrets with the power to kill.

Just Short of Excellent
Just read The Ghost by Robert Harris. This is the first of seven of his novels I have read that falls short of the standard of excellence. Why ? The novel is too close to recent events; I know this was intentional and the fictional Ex-Prime-minister is based on Tony Blair but the reader will not be able to remove this thought from his / her mind and it becomes more a comment on recent events than the work of a master storyteller which is what Robert Harris is. Nevertheless, the theory unfolded at the end is an interesting one and once again, I highly recommend a Robert Harris novel to potential readers.
My rating: 4/5.

Not a Ghost story
very well narrated. I wasn't too far ahead of the author...
worth a read / could have been finished better

It’s okay
Harris has nowhere near the writing skills of John Le Carré, but he can tell a tale

Captivating
The hero of this story is one that you become close to but from the distance of what feels like a secret observer. Whilst he is speaking to you he feels a little removed, and this is a clever twist. The story is captivating and moves at different paces as the details build, I didn't want to stop listening.

Not as gripping as other Robert Harris books I’ve read
…although I can’t claim to be able to give a complete review since I fell asleep missing chunks of the plot. It wasn’t sufficiently gripping to keep me awake and I wasn’t sufficiently interested enough to scroll back to the bits I missed. Sorry!

interesting story, parallels to real events 1990s+
I enjoyed this from start to finish - plot well constructed with enough pace to keep me interested. I like stories with political messages and this seemed to fit the bill in that respect.

Tale with many twists
An intriguing book. Couldn't stop listening. The reader was good. Though it's true that his American accents aren't convincing, Michael Jayston was quite easy to listen too. The plot is full of not always convincing twists but this didn't spoil the fun.

Fantastic - this is Blair of course!
Where does The Ghost rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
this is top of the second league of favourites - Secret Life of Bees and Book Thief come first of course ... and William Boyd - but very very good!
