Story
Joyland is a whodunit noir crime novel and a haunting ghost story set in the world of an amusement park. It tells the story of the summer in which college student Devin Jones comes to work as a 'carny' in small-town North Carolina and has to confront the legacy of a vicious murder, the fate of a dying child, and the way both will change his life forever. I believe there is a man inside every man, a stranger. So writes Wilfred James in his confession. It's 1922. Wilfred owns 80 acres of farmland in Nebraska that have been in the family for generations. His wife, Arlette, owns an adjoining 100 acres. But if Arlette carries out her threat to sell her land to a pig butcher, Wilfred will be forced to sell, too. Worse, he'll have to move to the city. But he has a daring plan. It may work if he can persuade his son.

Castle Rock is a small town where word gets around quickly. That's why Scott Carey wants to confide only in his friend Doctor Bob Ellis about his strange condition: he's losing weight, without getting thinner, and the scales register the same when he is in his clothes or out of them, however heavy they are. Scott also has new neighbours, who have opened a 'fine dining experience' in town, although it's an experience being shunned by the locals; Deidre McComb and her wife, Missy Donaldson, don't exactly fit in with the community's expectations.

Summary
In the emotional aftermath of her baby's sudden death, Em starts running. Soon she runs from her husband, to the airport, down to the Florida Gulf, and out to the loneliest stretch of Vermillion Key, where her father has offered the use of a conch shack he has kept there for years.
Em keeps up her running - barefoot on the beach, sneakers on the road - and sees virtually no one. This is doing her all kinds of good, until one day, she makes the mistake of looking into the driveway of a man named Pickering.
Pickering also enjoys the privacy of Vermillion Key, but the young women he brings there suffer the consequences. Will Em be next?

Wow! That was a rollercoaster of a story to listen to. I hadn't realised this was a Stephen King Short story, not that it made any difference to my listening quality. The narration was brilliant by Mare Winningham, who brought the suspense scarily to life with her brilliant reading. I'd definitely recommend this to other readers if you want a short sharp thrill!😁
