Summary

A new short story from award-winning author Ann Cleeves

Ann Cleeves, the Sunday Times number one best-selling and award-winning author of the Vera, Shetland and Two Rivers series, returns with a darkly delicious short story featuring DI Matthew Venn, as featured on ITV's The Long Call. This enthralling tale also features an exclusive extract from the 10th Vera Stanhope novel The Rising Tide publishing later this year.

It was winter. Cold and clear, a different sort of day for this coast where the westerly winds usually blew rain and cloud.

Detective Inspector Matthew Venn is standing by his kitchen window when he first spots them. Two young girls, facing away from him, seemingly staring towards something in the distance. They are holding hands, and they are alone.

Though not a natural with children, Matthew knows he must find out why the girls are here, on a school day, unsupervised. And so he meets Olivia and Imogen, a pair of sisters whose secrets Matthew must uncover if he hopes to get them home.

The Long Call and The Heron's Cry, the first two novels in the Two Rivers series, featuring Matthew Venn, are available now.

What a disappointment!

One very short story . Ann Cleeves excellent style is apparent but just too short to be appreciated

Shortchanged

I feel very let down. I did not see this book was short stories. It had all the making of an interesting well read novel. Instead it was hardly more than a chapter. I do not feel it was worthy of my £7-99 membership.

Very very short story

A very quick easy listen/read that actually gives off no overall story
It just adds more depth to the main characters then anything
They’re no real story
Other then two lost children on a beach
A lost mother
Finding the mother and talking to her
The end

Not one of her best but it is a short story so what else can we ask for
But get it free don’t buy it

Disappointed

This short story was very disappointing. Previous titles in this series were enjoyable so I took a chance. Not a good use of one credit.. I didn't even finish this book.

Don’t buy

Very confusing. Thought I was purchasing a short story.

I seem to be purchasing just a clip of more than one book

The girls on the shore

Really unhappy with this, didn’t realise it was a short story and didn’t enjoy it. Enjoyed the Vera intro more but feel I paid for an advertisement. Not happy at all.

Advert not short story

Very poor - a short story that goes nowhere and is followed by a longer preview of another Vera book. Narration of The girls on the shore very lacklustre. Do not buy this - it is not a good example of Ann Cleeves usually excellent writing. Annoyed that I can't return for a refund.

Disappointed

Really disappointed as I thought it was a long story. Feel cheated. A real waste of a credit.
