About this listen
Gluten. Salt. Sugar. Fat. These are the villains of the American diet - or so a host of doctors and nutritionists would have you believe. But the science is far from settled, and we are racing to eliminate wheat and corn syrup from our diets because we've been lied to. The truth is that almost all of us can put the buns back on our burgers and be just fine.
Remember when butter was the enemy? Now it's good for you. You may have lived through times when the Atkins Diet was good, then bad, and then good again; you may have wondered why all your friends cut down on salt or went Paleo; and you might even be thinking about cutting out wheat products from your own diet.
In this groundbreaking work, Alan Levinovitz, PhD, exposes the myths behind how we come to believe which foods are good and which are bad and points the way to a truly healthful life, free from anxiety about what we eat.

Many good points, many contradictions
It was a good listen. But the author contradicts himself repetitively on various topics which detracts from his authority on the subject.

A bit all over the place
Nothing new have I learned myself, as I have been researching these topics for years. A bit too boring at times. Might be of interest to someone who has never dug into this matter.

Great thoughts apart from the last chapter
I found 90% of the audio book very refreshing. We have become far to obsessed with what we eat and adapt to the latest hypes far too often. I felt actually a sign of relief to just let go of it and eat what I enjoy and not stress anymore. The last chapter has let the whole book down. First the author convinces the reader that no matter what „dangerous“ stuff is in our food, it does not make us ill or kill us, but then he tells us how dangerous the packaging of food is and how this lead to Autism? Really? I’m sure those studies are as little scientific as the ones that sugar is bad for children with autism. A shame.

Slept through most of it
Didn’t really get to the point, the last chapter was the most interesting, I think I slept through the rest due to boredom

Not the full book on audible
Pretty impossible to contact audible via the website. It’s not the full book. The last section of the book is pretty important too.

Could've been even shorter without the padding.
It's good that someone goes through the scientific literature and exposes the false beliefs about food,I liked this about the book but the author then tends to fill in the reasons why we buy into these false beliefs with tenuous anecdotes and theories that were rather woolly themselves and goes on to tell us we'd all be much happier and healthier if we just stopped worrying about what we ate which ironically is the claim from all the fad diets, super foodists etc. which he dismisses throughout the book. The reader was OK,rather slow with an odd stop/start cadence

Patronizing may be the right word to describe this
The message is not fully clear until the final chapter which is to avoid plastic and alluminium packaging etc which is brilliant advice. Finally the message of the book made sense. The voice is condescending and a little arrogant so irritates. It does not sympathise with the call for simple nutritious pre GM foods until the end of the book when glorious stews, pies and desserts of generations gone by are recalled. I understand the message not to worry, but no need to be so 'know it all'. A little grace and sympathy would not go amiss, especially considering that many those who listen to this are wanting help, not to be made to feel stupid.

Unscientific Mumbo Jumbo
Don’t read this, instead read a book by a scientifically qualified expert. The author’s subject is religion not diet.

a reminder that not all science is fact
I’m diagnosed celiac, my mum was, after a few careful weeks i’m eating grains again. This won’t work for everyone, it takes a resolve. I’ve been gluten free 5 years,. I eat steak with English mustard. I don’t know how I’d missed it but 6 months ago i realised it contained wheat. I didn’t want to stop eating it. I didn’t but the self drama I brought on myself was intense. Finally with some controlled introduction, I decided I’m not celiac anymore.
This book helped. My daughter gets hives with gluten, i introduced her, and she broke out in rashes again.., i continue to believe she is still celiac. I’m definitely not. Thankyou to the author
