About this listen

‘One of only two novels I've ever loved whose main characters are not human’ BARBARA KINGSOLVER

For fans of The Essex Serpent and The Mermaid and Mrs Hancock.

‘By far my favourite book of of the year’ Guardian

One cold night, two newcomers emerge onto the streets of 1899 New York, and it is never the same again.

But these two are more than strangers to this land, they are strangers to this world. From the depths of folkloric history come Chava the golem, a creature made of clay, brought to life by a disgraced rabbi and Ahmad, a djinni, born in the ancient Syrian desert and trapped in an old copper flask released accidentally by a tinsmith in a Lower Manhattan shop.

Two companions who were never meant to be released, and never meant to meet. And when they do, their opposing natures will be sealed by a special bond, but one that is threatened by watching eyes, roaming owners and a misunderstanding world.

A glittering gem of a novel, as spell-binding as it is compelling, The Golem and The Djinni asks us what we’re made of and how we can break free.

‘The author makes you care enough about the humanity of these magical spirits to not only see them through to the end but also to regret that you’ve reached the last page’ New York Times

‘A continuous delight — provocative, atmospheric, and superbly paced’ Boston Globe

Kept me enthralled until the end

There are some books that I think are ok and I sometimes listen to them on my commute to work and some I can't wait to get back to because I am desperate to know what happens next. This book is most definitely in the latter category. Never mind the commute, I listened to it at home, on the train and in the car and managed the full 18 hours or so within a month. I have always loved Arabian Nights type stories with Djinn so stretching my imagination to include a Golem was not too difficult. The only negative thing I can say about it was I got a bit lost with the Djinni ' s story of what was the past and what was the present but it all fit together at the end. I have a very visual imagination and saw and felt it all. Loved it!!

So good

The voice actor is so great at conveying the different characters. The story is exciting and touching. Each character was so interesting that I enjoyed every perspective equally. Really enjoyed it!

Amazing book!

I finish work early on Fridays, ( I operate vulcanising presses,(which are noisy) and I like to listen to books,(my hands are free using Bluetooth headphones).
I loved/love this book and will listen time and again.
I didn't,'t want to go home,...I wanted more!
The fifteen lives of Harry August is similar, and I've listened to this often.
The Golem and the Djinni leaves Harry August way, way, behind!
What a story, Helene Wrecker,...more please!

Loved it!

A great story interweaving myths from two semitic cultures. The narration was brilliant. I loved it and had no difficulty in keeping up with the different timelines.

Enchanting

What a very unusual, complex and engaging tale showing the humanity of two inhuman creatures. Beautifully read as well.

The Golem and The DJinni

I have really enjoyed this fantasy book. The characters are so very human in their own way even they are both fantastical creatures.
