Editor reviews

Originally serialized in Australian newspapers in 1933, Arthur Upfield’s colorful, melodramatic crime thriller starts off innocently enough as a tale of rivalry between two best friends, but, like a champion thoroughbred, shifts gears halfway through after Tom Pink, a stuttering, alcoholic jockey seeking revenge against the gangsters who brutally killed his prized horse, is introduced.

In the hands of a lesser narrator, Tom Pink’s speech impediment could’ve come off as an insensitive caricature, but Stig Weymss’ nuanced performance, along with capturing the brusque cadences Melbourne’s seedy criminal underworld, grounds this crime thriller in a compelling realism.

Summary

Melbourne during the Depression. A seedy, corrupt city. Someone has struck at the heart of Australia's soul: they have killed the horse that would have won the Melbourne Cup. For what motive? Profit, blackmail, a betting scam? Only Tom Pink, the rider of the murdered horse can find out.

Tom, born into the underworld he now tries to defeat, exposes graft and blackmail that reaches to the upper echelons of Melbourne society. His life and the lives of those he holds close will never be the same again.

A previously lost classic of Australian crime fiction.
