About this listen
High school reporter Sherri "Bax" Baxter is content being an outsider, with a reputation as a nosy busybody among the students of Jericho High. Instead of friendships, she focuses on objective journalistic integrity, because it will get her out of the dead-end Texas oil town and into a prestigious journalism school, and she's pretty sure she's found her big story.
A new girl, Molly, has come to town with a mysterious sideways grin, a bolero hat, a well-loved guitar case, and the musical talent of legendary blues man Stevie Ray Vaughan. Two of the school's rival rock groups need her for the upcoming Battle of the Bands, but Molly has a plan to cherry-pick the best musicians out of each band to form her own super group. Both bands engage in an increasingly dangerous rivalry ranging from theft and vandalism to assault and kidnapping.
Who better to tag along with Molly and get every juicy tidbit than the intrepid school snoop? She might even make a few friends along the way.

I did enjoy this book but it very different to what I have come to expect from this author. That's not to say there isn't any drama because it is mostly set in a school so full of drama, bullying, hormones and friendship. Many of the reviews I have read about this book said it was aimed at young teens but I am not so sure because it covers the very grown up situation of rape and while there is no sex scenes the subject certainly comes up. The reason I enjoyed this book was because I liked the characters and wanted to find out what happened to them. The author always comes up with interesting, strong leading female characters no matter what type of genre or subject he writes in and this book is no exception. The battling bands as a plot worked really well and made for a interesting story.
Sherri "Bax" Baxter is the school reporter and she always does an article about the new kid in school to help them feel welcome and less like a stranger but there is something about Molly Berryfield that peeks more than her journalistic instincts. Molly doesn't fit your normal mould of cheerleader, jock, geek or nerd and it is something more than just the hat that she never takes off. The pair strike up a friendship and when Molly asks her to be her manager to help her choose which band she wants to join for the battle of the band competition, Molly gets the feeling she might have just found her big story. The competition soon heats up and both bands will do anything to make sure they come out on top even commit violence. How will Molly choose which band is right for her or will she play her own beat?
The narrator was okay. I know it was supposed to be about teenagers but I think the narrator tried too hard to make them sound young, instead they just sounded to high pitched. I did get use to the voice but it took me a while.
