Critic reviews

"Told with impressive scholarship and panache. The result is a narrative that is clear, balanced, and builds to its denouement with a sense of pace and tension worthy of a John le Carré novel." ( Sunday Telegraph)

A Roller Coaster

I had never read or listened to Antonia Fraser before this and I am now a convert. Truly gripping narrative well told, well balanced yet pacy narrative - a masterpiece

Terrorism, crusade, or sting

I couldn’t put this book down. Set in the context not only of the exciting action but also of the religious background and mistrust of Catholics which persisted for another 200 years I found this absolutely fascinating. And beautifully read

concise coverage of the plot

I thought this was just the right level of detail. The background detail is key to events and it was nice to have several myths busted

Beautiful

Thoroughly enjoyed the story, the narration, background, the worded part was that it ended, and I very rarely say that about a book. Beautiful. I’m now going to listen to it all over again, what more can I say?

Very enjoyable short book

It was narrated well and historically interesting, for a serious subject there was also a few opportunities for a wee chuckle, would recommend.

An explosive plot - but more of a damp squib

Despite Robert Powell's gorgeous narration, this book just did not hold my interest. Given the explosive subject matter I'd expected to be fascinated, but no. I've listened to less than half of the book and wanted to return it, but Audible says I can't. Damp squibs all round really.
