About this listen

Four hundred years in the future, the most dangerous criminals are kept in suspended animation aboard prison ships and 'rehabilitated' in a shared virtual reality environment. But Miska Storrow, a thief and hacker with a background in black ops, has stolen one of these ships, The Hangman's Daughter, and made it her own. Controlled by explosive collars and trained in virtual reality by the electronic ghost of a dead marine sergeant, the thieves, gangsters, murderers, and worse are transformed into Miska's own private indentured army: the Bastard Legion. Are the mercenaries just for fun and profit, or does Miska have a hidden purpose connected to her covert past?

Action thriller sci-fi

I found this a bit of a struggle. The characters are a little wooden and a little too obvious. The storyline is okay-ish, but I do wish writers wouldn't sacrifice forward momentum with expositional back story.

Imaginative

What did you like best about The Hangman's Daughter? What did you like least?

I think the story was interesting and left a lot for the imagination. Because i had nothing to work with other than the words i was visually trying to imagine everything that was happening in the story which i felt gave this a unique experience.

The story was very good however i did find myself getting lost a few times which made it a bit hard to follow. For the most part it was enjoyable to listen to.

Performance was 10/10 but the story was just ok

I liked this book. The voice actress was superb and everything was described in such a descriptive way which made the fight scenes amazing to listen to but the story was just "ok". It was interesting and I did want to keep listening to the next chapter but at random times I would just phase out in the car sometimes and not bother rewinding the audio. Giving it a 4/5 from the voice acting for the amazing action scenes and bringing the main characters to life is such a descriptive way.

A non-stop explosion-fest

What made the experience of listening to The Hangman's Daughter the most enjoyable?

An excellent reading of some non-stop military SF action.

What other book might you compare The Hangman's Daughter to, and why?

If you like Gavin's other work, Hangman's Daughter is for you!

What does Amy Finnegan bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

A variety of voices and she really brings both Miska and her dad to life.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No.

Good story for a first chapter

Good first book setting up the main story line and characters, but, to me it is a little predictable and you can see where the other may lead. I hope this is not the case and look forward to the next chapter and more characters who we will either love or hate.
Amy Finnegan did the reading justice and was a pleasure to listen to, hopefully she read the next instalment of this series.

Mediocre

It was ok, I guess. Not brilliant, not terrible. Bubblegum sci-fi written for the Netflix generation. I sing think I'll bother with book 2.

Confused

Well it seemed to be going along quite nicely and then she did that time slip thing, back 6 months and then I was totally confused for the entire rest of the book. This whole 'before' thing really isn't my cup of tea. Lots of unusual words and concepts too. I don't like to have to think when I'm listening to a story, I listen whilst I'm driving generally and thus was just very difficult to keep track of.

Failure to Launch

So, after four attempts to listen to this one I'm not quite at the halfway stage and it's time to accept that it just isn't going to take off for me. I think the concept was fine but the writing felt very staid and the characters one-dimensional. The lead Miska was an uneven mix and simply didn't make me care for her in any way.

Amy Finnegan tries very hard to lift it and does a quality job. It's a really tough gig as a female narrator because although we have Miska in the lead she occupies a world of stereotypical tough guys and creepy blokes. Very hard combination for any narrator and I think she emerges from this with a lot of credit.

Overall though it just didn't work for me and it's not a series I can imagine going any further with.

Awful

I did not like this book.
I thought the story was a bit all over the place, I felt the narration was to soft, I felt that it had some cliches which surround a strong female character.
Can we please have a sifi book where the strong women doesn't was to 'kiss' everyone and just wants to kick some butt.
I stopped listening after chapter 8 as I just didn't know what was happening in the majority of the book.

Not good.
