Summary

Hannah Riley and her musician husband, Will, hope that a move to the Suffolk countryside will promise a fresh start. Hannah, a human rights worker, is desperate for a child and she hopes that this new life will realise her dream. Yet when the snow comes, Will is working in London and Hannah is cut off in their remote village.

Life in Tornley turns out to be far from idyllic: Who are the threatening figures who lurk near their property at night? And why is her neighbour so keen to see them leave? Plus Will's behaviour is severely testing the bonds of trust.

Hannah has spent her professional life doing the right thing for other people. But as she starts to unbury a terrible crime, she realises she can no longer do that without putting everything she's ever wanted at risk. But if she does nothing, the next victim could be her....

Ridiculous but compelling

I think that both Louise Millar and Clare Corbett should be congratulated as somehow from a ridiculous storyline full of plot holes, unbelievable happenings and stereotyped characters they have created an utterly compelling audiobook that I could not stop listening to ! This is definitely the weakest of Louise Millar's three novels but I still had to listen compulsively to find out what happened at the end. As ever, Clare Corbett narrates beautifully and it is probably her narration that stopped me abandoning it half way through.

Loved it from start to finish

What did you like most about The Hidden Girl?

An enjoyable read that had me wanting to know what happens right from the start

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Hidden Girl?

The moment her new friend lies to her partner and when a hiding place is discovered

What does Clare Corbett bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Builds the atmosphere and tension well

Any additional comments?

A big fan of Louise Millars books and this is just as good as the earlier books. A good holiday read with the just the right level of suspense to keep you hooked

Unsympathetic characters

There wasn’t a single sympathetic character in the whole book - and you really couldn’t care what happened to them. Implausible plot was drawn out and seemed then rushed at the end. The one saving grace was the performance.

The Hidden Girl

Predictable, irritating and average. I found the story unbelievable, the main characters were one dimensional and if I'd heard about the painting and decorating once more... I did slog on to the predictable twist at the end as I try to finish every book I listen to/read.

The most enjoyable chapters were the ones which contained the descriptive narrative of the snow which teamed down so much so that the husband couldn't get home for days but they could cut the grass! So 2 stars for that as it gave me a laugh!

The narrator did a good job with the material given but thankfully it was a BOGOF.

Kept me listening.

A good story and narrated well.
I would have liked another chapter to tie up the loose ends but otherwise really enjoyed it.

I absolutely loved this book!!

When a young couple move to their dream home, who knew the drama that would unfold. Filled with intrigue and excitement. Not only do this couple suffer with the stressful process of adoption, they have a new home and weird neighbours to deal with. I’ve never read any books by this author and If any of her other work is as good as this I’ll be very happy. Only criticism I have was I didn’t like the character Will as I found him frustrating. But wow, what a great book and would definitely recommend.
