Summary

St Philomena's military hospital has been abandoned for over three years. Now Lilian Chesterfield, who works for one of the most successful building companies in England, is in charge of developing it into a luxury housing complex.
But as soon as she and her colleagues start work in the Jacobean-style mansion, their dream turns into a nightmare. They hear screaming from wards full of empty beds. One of the best I have listened to in its genre!
The twists and turns slapped me!
The different turns this story had, the folklore it drew on. What a ride. Superbly narrated, the narrator excelled in the accents. Just superb.

Good idea, badly executed
I thought that this book was going to be great, as I like a good ghost story and the set up of the book was interesting. However, the dialogue between the characters just doesn't work and the female protagonist isn't likeable.

Good story
This is an interesting take on the haunted house story. I found it stopped being scary about halfway through and felt more like a thriller at that point, which isn’t a bad thing! I did have some issues with the female lead being a little questionably portrayed in places. Overall this was a good story and worth checking out if you like haunted houses!

A great story
It had me gripped all of the way through. I like to listen when i do housework, and this was so good I was searching for things to clean lol. I highly recommend this book.

Format: audiobook
Narrator: Emma Gregory
This was my first Graham Masterton book but it won’t be my last, this story gave a different spin on ‘ghosts’ it didn’t involve the usual hauntings that we usually get in stories, I don’t want to give away details and spoil it for anyone so all I’ll say is give it a go and be prepared for some gory details!
The narrator does a good job.

Predictable but Enjoyable
Not sure if it was meant to come across as slightly tongue in cheek, or if it was due to the narrator’s slightly comical voices for the male characters. That being said it was entertaining enough. Narration was good otherwise but the storyline lacked any real depth.

Mmm - difficult to keep interested in.
Emma Gregory’s narration kept me listening to this story to the end. I lost interest after the 3rd graphic description of a body being blown apart. Found the heroine annoying eventually.
Some convincing characters but tedious in parts.

was this secretly written by Garth Marenghi?
I genuinely don't know if this was intended to be a horror or a comedy and it baffles me this was given 4.1 stars, this feels like it was a lost episode of Garth Marenghis Darkplace.
the story consists of bizarre interactions between paper thin cliché caricatures of people and a hand full of admittedly great moments of visceral gore that are then immediately undermined by a ridiculous simile or description. there are also several references to Covid and vaccines that feel a little forced and served next to no narrative purpose.
the general theme of the story is great and could have been really haunting but I feel it's been poorly executed, what could have been an interesting look into the long lasting affects of PTSD and traumatic battlefield injuries feels cheepened by the at times slapstick horror.
the narration was great if not a little quiet in parts and I'd be interested to hear more of their work.
in conclusion,
if I wasn't so entertained by the laughable events in this book I might have been even more critical.

Some people shouldn't write women.
After listening to another of his books I decided to give this one a go and regretted it. Paper thin plot with gaping plot holes. Poor character writing and progression. It could have been an interesting story but it just fell flat. No tension, no building, no fear, nothing really redeemable about this story.
The writing of the females in this book as well was almost offensive, living up to every stereotype. They're vain, self obsessed. Caring more about "spanx" and how attractive they feel than anything going on around them. It was bizarre.
The narrator really did the best with what she could but this is definitely not a good example of his work. The other I listened to was written from a male perspective and it did make a difference. This writer just should not be writing women, the lack of complexity or character was painful. Also only describing female characters physically and a singular male was a strange choice.
