Lisa needs to disappear. And her friend's rambling old home in the wilds of Yorkshire seems like the perfect place. It's miles away from the closest town, and no one there knows her or her little boy, Joe.

But when Lisa meets some of the locals and hears some disturbing rumours about the house, she realises it might not be the sanctuary she thought.

What secret has Rowan Isle House - and her friend - kept hidden all these years?

And what will Lisa have to do to survive when her own past finally catches up with her?

Loved it!

Oh wow! This book gave me the tingles. It’s atmospheric, haunting, heartbreaking and mysterious. The lake and wild Yorkshire countryside backdrop framing the dilapidated house intrigued me from the start.

I bought both the Kindle and audio versions of this book and absorbed the story through a combination of both. Georgia May-Foote and Emily Barber brought these characters to life in a most absorbing way for me as the listener.

I felt the plight of the young soldier, so eager to please in every way and I was left almost shell-shocked at what Sarge was both putting her through and taking from her.

Lisa’s character entered the story with a bang too. A young woman, fleeing with her child, bringing along a tale yet to tell. Nuala Ellwood weaves the story of the mother and the soldier beautifully and the ending had me feeling a range of emotions. I love how Isobel’s character married the two viewpoints so skilfully.

This was a book that evoked my senses. I could feel the cold, the heat, smell; the house both then and now. It had so much about it in how it drew me in as a reader, so much so, I had this one finished in just over a day as I couldn’t stop reading and listening.

If you enjoy mysterious, atmospheric reads that fall into the psychological thriller/mystery categories, then you can’t afford to miss The House on the Lake. It is a thing of sadness spanning years and years that comes bang up to date. I’d definitely recommend the audiobook as it adds another chilling layer to the whole story. It’s a must read/listen! Loved it!

Different but great

I was surprised when I first started this book as I didn’t know what to expect but I was hooked and couldn’t stop listening. I really enjoyed it and it was different to other books I’ve read.

The narrators were great, expect doing the child’s voice which was really annoying!

I’ll be looking out for more from the author.

Couldn't stop listening

Amazing performance, great voice acting. It was so good, I couldn't stop listening.

I liked the book too, it was gripping. Everytime I thought I guessed what was happening in the story, another twisting story emerged. I have just finished the book and I am still thinking about it. I will definetely read other books of Nuala Ellwood.
