About this listen

"To be opened in the event of my death." With one swift, vicious movement, she sliced the envelope open, and pulled out a handwritten letter. "Love you and the girls...so sorry to leave you with this...cannot bear...."

The Husband's Secret is a funny, heartbreaking novel of marriage, grief, love, and secrets. When her husband announces he's in love with her best friend, painfully shy Tess picks up her young son and returns to her mother's house. There she begins an unexpected affair with an old flame.

Rachel is a woman in her 60s consumed by grief and anger at the loss of her daughter 20 years earlier. When her son announces he is taking her beloved grandson overseas, Rachel begins a descent into deeper bitterness and pain.

Cecilia is the quintessential "I don't know how she does it" woman. A devoted mother to three daughters, she runs her household like clockwork, is President of the P&C, owns an extremely successful Tupperware business and is happy in her 15-year marriage. Until she discovers a letter in their attic labeled: "To my wife Cecilia, to be opened in the event of my death".

Her husband's secret is a bombshell beyond all imagining with repercussions across the lives of all three women.

Makes you want to listen to the end

It' starts with a series of dis-jointed characters that you wonder how they can be connected but the story knits together beautifully. The end is is materpiece in not prejudging conclusions, can' t recommend highly enough

Secondary storylines more interesting

Would you try another book written by Liane Moriarty or narrated by Caroline Lee?

Possibly.

Would you recommend The Husband's Secret to your friends? Why or why not?

Probably not. The one friend I thought might like it also found it dreary and predictable.

What didn’t you like about Caroline Lee’s performance?

Slow. Slow. Slow... Didn't like her as Cecilia. Preferred her as Tess.

If this book were a film would you go see it?

No. I might not immediately tun over if it were on TV, but I wouldn't go out of my way to watch it either.

Any additional comments?

It was difficult to empathise with Cecilia as she was portrayed as smug and Stepfordesque. Tess and Rachel were flawed thus more believable. Too much time was spent unnecessarily detailing the character of Cecilia's children and there wasn't enough development of the character of John Paul, so I was left underwhelmed by the story's principal storyline.

Slow burner

This started off very slowly and I found my mind starting to wander however I gave it the benefit of the doubt and persevered. It paid off and I did actually enjoy it.
A young girl dies and three families are put under the spotlight afterwards. The story unfolds going between the past and modern day to a surprising conclusion.
I gave it 4 stars due to the slow start but it was worth it in the end.

Brillian, gripping novel

Would you listen to The Husband's Secret again? Why?

I'm not sure I have never listened to anything twice and I have only read a handful of books more than once. There are too many good books out there.

What did you like best about this story?

Amazing characters and insight, very original style and brilliant narrator.

Which character – as performed by Caroline Lee – was your favourite?

Tess an Cecilia.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The epilogue made me very nearly cry I had to seriously compose myself because I was on the tube.

Any additional comments?

I'm hooked on Lianne Moriarty this is the third audiobook I have heard from her, I have bought this one for my sister too and I'm looking for the fourth one to buy. I have never read four novels in such close succession from the same writer.

Fantastic!

I’ve never read anything by this author before...how did I miss this amazing storyteller? The story had me captivated from the start, Liane weaves in the tales of three apparently unconnected women so brilliantly, and just keeps you guessing. Sometimes a great story is spoiled by a bad narrator, but the narrator was excellent, faultless reading and perfect intonation. Can’t wait for another Liane Moriarty audio book.

Good overall

I was initially put off by the first chapter, glad I stuck with it, turned out to be a good book, although I personally sometimes struggled between the switching between different character storylines
