Summary

Discover the first medieval adventure in the action-packed Chivalry series! Perfect for fans of Bernard Cornwell, Simon Scarrow and Conn Iggulden.

September, 1356. Poitiers.

The greatest knights of the age were ready to give battle.

On the English side, Edward, the Black Prince, who'd earned his spurs at Crecy.

On the French side, the king and his son, the dauphin. With 12,000 knights.

And then there is William Gold. A cook's boy - the lowest of the low - who had once been branded as a thief. William dreams of being a knight, but in this savage new world of intrigue, betrayal and greed, first he must learn to survive.

As rapacious English mercenaries plunder a country already ravaged by plague, and the peasantry take violent revenge against the French knights who have failed to protect them, is chivalry any more than a boyish fantasy?

True story, brilliantly narrated.

The narrator is superb, and really brings the story and characters to life. This is also a true story; Sir William Gold really existed and although the author has had to embellish the thin and bare bones of mediaeval historical records, he's done it beautifully. He also knows his military history and many of the details of a knight's accoutrements ring true.

The Bemused Knight

For perhaps 80-90% of this audiobook I had no idea where the story was going or what the central character was doing in a cast of 100s. Perhaps it was simply the terrific narration by Saul but I was still thoroughly engaged and really enjoyed this. Not sure I’ll dive into the next book in the series but it’s a definite maybe!

The epic story I have always wanted to listen to

This book is perfection. The story follows a man in search of chivalry and knighthood while trying to abandon a life of sin. This story follows the youth of a boy as he grows to become a warrior during the crusades. The author doesn't rush it either. He takes his time to allow the character to evolve and grow. Honestly a masterpiece!

Only criticism that I do have is that the audio is on the silent side. The narrator does an amazing job as well. I shall listen to it again for sure!

True boys own adventure with female Knight to boot

If you want to emerse yourself in the world of war, companionship, chivalry, Knights, archers, blood and death then look no further. This (audio) book has it all. A ripping yarn, heraldic persuits and a superb narrator that turns this from a good story into a gripping one.

Simply...

wonderful! Magnificently written and told. The epilogue brought a tear to this cynical old man's eye.

Excellent Entertainment

Quite simply one of the best books of this genre I have ever read or listened to. The author never allows the central character to wallow in triumph or disaster, though there is plenty of both in this book but moves swiftly through this epic tale with elan and not a little literary capability which makes the book very difficult to put down. Most of the provincial wars and skirmishes are new ground for me, those in Provincial France and particularly those in Italy which I found interesting, though it’s the intensely written set pieces, of which there are plenty, that sets the blood racing, written as well or better then anyone else in the field.
Saul Reichman is a superb companion throughout.
Bravo Mr Cameron!

The Well-Crafted Adventure

I have always had a liking for stories in which the past is recollected and retold by a now aged veteran of the times depicted. I have read some excellent works by notable authors such as Rosemary Sutcliff and Bernard Cornwell, both of whom have, on occasion, employed this method of story telling. The Ill-Made Knight, together with its sequels, are, in my opinion, amongst the very best. The books paint such a vivid picture of a soldier's life in medieval europe, that they bring history to life in all of its brutal, shocking and sometimes, tender and comic reality. The story is a wonderful and totally engrossing epic and the narrators are both quite exceptional. Books 1 and 2 are brilliantly narrated by Saul Reichlin and book 3 by Peter Noble. A highly recommended read or listen!

If you are into medieval times you'll love this, I've enjoyed ever second of it and it's quite realistic.
