Summary

The last survivors of humanity have just been deposited on Pandora, a horrific, poisonous planet rife with deadly nerve-runners, hooded dashers, airborne jellyfish, and intelligent kelp. The determined colonists attempt to establish a bridgehead on the deadly, inhospitable planet, but more trouble arises. Their sentient ship - backed up by an impressive array of armaments - has decided it is God and is insisting the colonists find appropriate ways to worship it.

In an attempt to help the people pass its test, Ship awakens chaplain-psychiatrist Raja Flattery from hibernation. Either the humans pass the test - or the human race could be destroyed.

Interesting but hard to follow

I love Grank Herbert’s Dune and the Dune universe, but this is an even tougher story to follow. It has been recommended that it requires 2 visits to get it.

Recommended

I enjoyed this much more than Destination: Void.
Well-written dialogue and skilfully-developed characters in an adventure story that drew me in, with Scott Brick on top form, so that I was slightly saddened to reach the end.

Frank herbert never dissapoints

Would you consider the audio edition of The Jesus Incident to be better than the print version?

They complement each other. It is a new experience to be able to listen to a well loved and many times read book.

Have you listened to any of Scott Brick’s other performances? How does this one compare?

Yes. Very good performance.

Any additional comments?

Intelligent science fiction. I wouldn't be surprised if this was Cameron's inspiration for his film Avatar. However this is a far superior story.

Good story

Very compelling and unusual. Pleased to find it as its not his most popular work.

Better not.

More a fantasy/philosophical text with a thin venire of SciFi,
Almost nothing feels grounded in science and it's more a debate about slavery and objectification of humans in the form of clones.
Would not go trough it again.

Of its time

Overly complex this book becomes boring, not easy to engage with a character I found myself going back several chapters trying to get the point., I gave up. If I could send it back I would.

Story is far too long and tedious. Not recommended

Frank Herbert was a brilliant author in so many books and then produces this. It is a rambling often boring book consisting of bland monologues without much (if any) drama until the final 20% of the Jesus Incident.
It isn't helped by the narrator who speaks in a monotone for most of the book. The characters are bland and uninteresting.

Such a pity.
