Summary

The creation of the King James Bible was an extraordinary event in literary and religious history. This was a political act of nation-building and it was a great spiritual gift, of "one more exact translation of the Holy Scriptures into the English tongue", this new translation stamped with royal approval.

The King James Version of the Bible changed and helped create the modern English language. Just as with Shakespeare, so this magnificent text was planted deep in the English-speaking people’s consciousness, and there it would grow and thrive. We hear its influence in America, in Britain, in Australia. We hear it in India and in Africa. And here we are, at a point of origin and the heart.

Oliver Peers' reading of this classic text is clean, fresh and modern. He asks the listener to hear the King James Version anew—as a contemporary text. Oliver's stated aim has been that the glory of the language of the King James Version sit perfectly in accord, 400 years on, with easy receptivity to God's word, just as if we were hearing a friend share a tale with us—and here we have the word of God with all the richness, the beauty and the poetry of the King James Version to delight and enthrall.

Excellent! A powerful read of a great text

There is something of the rhythm of prayer in this. It's very regular - very measured. As such there is an intensity - which gathers. Oliver Peers has a beautiful voice. There is a depth and sensitivity. This is gentle, careful. Perhaps do not listen to this recording while operating heavy machinery. To read in a sustained way at this level - prayerful - is quite an achievement.

It's a nice reading

It's very clear and precise - it's sharply focused. Every word counts. It's a reading to listen to carefully and to meditate on. It's very powerful.

A very English read - of a very English Bible!

I loved this. Oliver Peers has the nicest voice and pretty much this reading is error-free - which in itself is a remarkable accomplishment. The KJV is tricky!

Oliver is softly spoken and the pace is slow. This might infuriate some people! I think it works. I could trust the regularity of the reading and let my mind wander. It is quite intense, but I could drift in and out and click to go back to a point to play back again.

I am really interested in how different people read various translations of the Bible differently.

I love the KJV and it's really nice and good to hear Oliver tackling the text with such consideration.

A sensitive, prayerful read of a beautiful text

Oliver's reading really has appealed to me because it is prayerful. It does not impose an emotion. It is quiet and careful and paced, and as such can seem all the more intense - and enable the attentiveness and emotion, the feeling of the text, almost vibrating from within, in the listener. It is a far cry from more bombastic renditions of the KJV.

The recital is pretty much flawless in terms of precision in enunciation. This is quite an achievement given some of the challenges in reading the KJV in this prayerful mode. It is worth a listen when there is time and silence to enter into the text. I think there is a lot to be heard that maybe I hadn't heard before. Perhaps it is that Oliver's rather softly spoken English accent adds to the subtlety - and in a strange way the intensity. It's worth a listen.
